Why the euro spec? I’m new to this
The only industry motor oil spec that specifically focuses on protecting high-performance gasoline engines is ACEA A3/B4. Most of the oils labeled “euro” meet the ACEA A3/B4, but some are C3 so you have to check. The mobil1 x2 FS 5w50 and pennzoil 5w40 euro both meet A3/B4, but motorcraft 5w50 does not. Castrol and pennzoil make a 5w30 A3/B4 as well if you want to keep viscosity low, but these don’t meet API SN+ or SP if that’s important to you.

Have no clue to what the api sn* or sp is

I run amsoil 5w30 signature. Though im thinking about trying 5w40 next time. Just to see if i can tell any change good or bad.

If you’re not racing road courses for 12-15 minute sessions, none of you will ever reach 235°+ oil temperatures. Adding a supercharger and daily driving or even 10 seconds down the drag strip doesn’t warrant a 40-50WT oil. Viscosity is a thickness rating at temperature. A 5W-50 oil might be a wise choice if racing road track hard for 15 minutes straight, but the average owners car with a blower on top really isn’t seeing any higher oil temperatures than running on the street or making a couple 9-11 second drag passes. Thankfully the 5W covers the low temperature load and flow characteristics for mostly everyone. For me, even with 5-10 second WOT blasts, 5W-30 is all I’ll my lower end will ever need. A 5W-30 will flow better, cool better, Warrant less load on the OPG’s and overall result in better efficiency.

Those are the oil rating spec'd by the manufactures. API SN+ and SP are low ash oil spec'd to prevent LSPI on these newer smaller factory boosted engines.

API SN is an older oil spec ,

I wouldn't run a 50w oil either, you're better off with a shear stable 30w, I've been running Rotella 5w-30 T6 in my SC'd 3v, the UOA shows it maintains grade at 6000mile OCI, and it wont break the wallet like Redline or Amsoil .

Ford specs 5w50 in all the Shelby's and the Boss engines. I wouldn't use anything less in a forced induction engine or one that spins to 7800 or higher.

I'd also make sure the oil meets ACEA A3/B4 spec. Like Liqui Moly and several others. Most of the newer API specs are for emissions reduction not engine protection.

They also have to assume potential owners are going to be putting these cars on a road course for 15 minutes straight at 4500-7500rpm and have to warranty that type of operation.

98.8% of purchasers DON’T do that…..

The oil film thickness is a function of relative surface speed, surface roughness, normal pressure, and viscosity, viscosity being a function of oil characteristics, temperature, and to a lesser extent shear and normal pressure. Adding a supercharger increases normal pressure by 50% or more, so the most practical way to maintain design film thickness is to increase viscosity at operating temperature.

After some in depth research, the film thickness discussion becomes clear that it doesn’t really work like how we would think. It’s about clearance, flow speed through these clearances, and temperature to maintain these 3 factors. Hence why so many out there continue to use 5W-20, 30 etc even with added supercharging and no unheard of failure. The amount of depth of these discussions is insane as you know. Viscosity at temperature for 99% of us, is #1 factor when considering oil viscosity. Flow is what keeps the parts not separated, not film “thickness”. From what I’ve gathered anyway. If we never reach let’s say 225° oil temp, we all could easily use a 5W-20 even with any power adder added.

Realistically however, we all could run 5W-20 to 5W-50 and never have excessive wear. :).

Just to add my data point. I run Castrol Edge 5w50. I shift at 7800-7900rpm.

Does anyone run VR1? in 10w30, 20w50 or 5w50?

Looks like the 5-50, 20-50 and 10-60 meet A3/B4, can't find any info for the 10-30

Putting a Ess g2 kit on my 2019 auto pp1. I drive the car everyday and it gets slight street action only no track at all. Should I use 5w50 or 5w30? Still on stock opgs if that matters ?
Amsoil 5w50 full synthetic for me. 2017 PP with Roush Phase 2.
