Nothing for most people. Well, I think there is probably a factory recommended service interval to flush the diff fluid, but its going to be pretty long.

Those of us concerned with changing diff oil are tracking our cars and are concerned about performance at high temperatures and general accelerated maintenance schedule due to extra hard use.

Its a waste of time and $$ changing the diff oil for a street car, you won't notice any difference.
After 1 hour on track (at a track day) you are supposed to change it. What we know now is, it's a very good idea.

Found out that BG Products has a local Distributorship here in Houston and picked up some Transmission and Differential fluid. So far shifting feels buttery smooth and diff is a little quieter and less thud than before.

How much? I'm curious what they charged you.

it has an engine!
This thread is partly about about optimum, not someone local bg location to you. Kind of crappy to take attention away from a vendor here that takes good care of people. They went out of their way to make install kits with directions. Just my thoughts though.

$17 a quart for the Transmission oil and $24.75 for the Diff oil.

This thread was not started by Optimum and is not in the vendor section. This thread is about how good this BG stuff is. Figured this would be a good place to post instead of starting a new thread.

Im aware. But it was started about Optimum and the product. But i do see your point on not wanting to start another thread. Just dont want vendors like optimum thats gone out of their way to make an install kit for us, losing buisness

I understand. BG stuff has been amazing so far. I highly recommend. So if you are not in the Houston area I would highly suggest ordering from Optimum.

https://www.bgprod.com/programs/lifetime-bg-protection-plan/

Bg seems to offer a protection plan on any lubricated parts if they need replaced. This only is valid if you replace the fluid every 30K miles and is only good up to $2,000 but thats a huge deal. Good to see a company standing behind their products.
I can't tell reading that but suspect you might have to have a BG shop install the fluid to get the protection plan. Anyone know if that's true or can you do it yourself and log it like with the Ford warranty service requirements?

What are disadvantages for street driving? Just worse fuel mileage?
diff fluid isnt going to have any noticeable effect on mpg. The higher viscosity at high temps 140 vs 90 will maintain lubrication better when hot, such as running on the track.
I'm still interested in what are the disadvantages of 140 for street driving.

If there aren't any disadvantages to using 140 on the street, there would be no point in offering both. Price is the same; mileage is the same; 140 is better for tracking. When is 90 BETTER than 140 and why? Need to know before I order.

Just ordered from Optimum! Anything that will smooth out the MT82 a little, I'm on board for!

75W-90 is more effeicient. 75W-140 will take the heat better. If you never had an issue run something that is close to OE viscosity. If you want better protection there is no real downside to a heavier oil in the differential. They run really hot. Cant go wrong with either one.

I'm ready. Only remaining question is to do the trans only or trans and diff. I guess it depends on whether new diffs have a bunch of metal fragments in them from manufacturing and break-in that its good to get rid of.

How many miles on it? Don't be alarmed if you find a bunch of stuff stuck to the drain plug if you decide to do the rear axle. If you decide only to do one and decide on the other one later just put a note on the next order and I will give you the Combo discount. in AZ I would say try the 75W-140.

3,4xx miles and its a Torsen (if it matters). I know Ford would say no need. But if there could be significant crud in there from manufacturing/break-in that isn't just going to recreate itself after a change, might as well get it out sooner than later.

I'm guessing the shelf life for unopened diff fluid is substantial, so I just ordered the combo with 75W140 now even if you think no point in doing the diff now. I appreciate the offer to combine a later order for the diff to retroactively make it a combo but no need to complicate things.

Thanks for all the help. Still interested in if YOU would change the diff now if it was your car or put the fluid on the shelf and wait awhile.

The trans is an easy decision to do now because the combination of factory fluid and MT82 is crap.
