I chose the base for multiple reasons. there are a fair amount of bells and whistles as compared to previous gen mustangs(mine in sig) and personally, I didn't love the options the premium had to offer. I hate the factory headunit and speakers, and will be going aftermarket anyway.

im installing aftermarket seats shortly, so it was pointless for me to get leather heated and cooled just to take out. when the car is tuned, most of the cool factory setting options will become obsolete, and the base has steering settings and works quite fine in the sport mode as is.

plus, as I have learned with the bmws, audis, and other cars I have owned in the past, the more bells and whistles, the more crap that can go wrong, which equals $$ and time at the dealer.

the biggest downfall in my opinion is the base vs premium rear bumper, which can be fixed with an aftermarket diffuser, or custom diffuser add ons, but to some is an eyesore as factory

You are correct about the modes. As a whole with one button/toggle flip...the premium has them. However, in sifting through different threads it seems that adjusting traction, steering, and possibly something else (that I'm forgetting)....the premium modes can be simulated.

Shift points on automatics also get adjusted on Premiums. But if you've got a Base GT manual (like me) then that becomes a moot point.
The one thing I'm curious about is the Premium Mode switch is also supposed to adjust throttle response. However on the base cars they are supposed to be permanently locked in "Sport" mode as the throttle response is always real time.

On the Premiums, setting to Snow/Wet Delays throttle response and there is no difference between Normal and Sport +. I would also wager a bet there is no difference in Track mode either.

I'm sort of in the same boat though. I've had leather in my Tiburon for the last 8 years and have gotten tired of it. Shame we can't at least get heated seats in the cloth buckets. I would've upgraded the stereo if that were possible, not to mention would've preferred some other wheel choices. I would've liked some sort of "Handling Package" that would give you all the suspension goodies of the Performance Package without being forced to take the 3.73 gears and the black wheels.

Still, a person can buy all of that stuff over the counter at significant savings to buying them factory equipped. A handy person could do all the suspension mods in an afternoon.

I too have a base GT. The cloth seats are much easier to maintain than the leather (based on owning Mustangs over the last 18 years). If you have an Android phone text messaging is possible.... The system will notify you of a new text on the radio screen. Press the voice button and and say' Read text message'. Samantha (Fords Sync voice) will speak the message to you. You can say 'Reply to message' and on the radio screen four canned responses will appear. You can say 'Next page' and four more will appear (up to 15 or so are available). Say the line number and respond 'Yes' when she asks to send the message. (The person receiving the message will see 'Sent from my Ford' attached to the end of the response). This rarely works with an IPhone.
If you have an Android with the Google feature, you can respond to the text via your phone. I leave my phone in the cup holder. If I need to respond to a text I just say "OK Google now" then say who I want to send text to, and the message. Google will confirm message and I just say "Send". Then if I get a response, I use Samantha to read the message to me so I stay hands free.

My iPhone also works flawlessly on the speak to text, with just a " hey Siri"

I have a 16 base model non PP GT, and I love it. 3.31 gearing....Figured if I want, say leather seats, I'll have a reputable interior shop just recover them, higher end materials I select and not what Ford uses...If I want to re-gear it, heck I'll just by the gear and have it installed....Its like Burger King, I'll build it my way from the basest of the base...I dont need sat nav, I don't need accent interior lighting, nor a Pony logo on the ground when I open the door...Im more of a "no frills" kinda guy...If I need it, I'll just buy it myself.

What I don't like about both those options is that (a) they require the phone to be where IT can hear you and you can hear it (b) it conflicts with the infotainment outputs. Not sure about all that if the Mustang can activate Siri hand free with a steering wheel button. But even then, there are numerous drawbacks.

Those are some of the reasons I went with Windows Phones back in 2013. Windows phones integrate with any car Bluetooth (even add-ons) completely hand free (except for add on Bluetooth that may require some button pushing).

I can be playing music in the car from any source or using Nav and if a text comes in, the car stereo/nav will be muted or paused and the text will be announced and offered to be read all over the car's speakers and using the car's microphone for input (eg the command read or ignore). Likewise I am offered to dictate a response and send it, all hands free using the car's speakers and microphone. I can also use any phone voice commands via the car's microphone by simply "calling" Cortana as I would call a real person. When she answers, I can give commands and receive any output via the car's speakers and microphone.

So I really have no use for Sync to interface with my phone. Its just an unnecessary extra layer if you carry a Windows Phone. Sync is fine just not necessary for phone access.

It's because the base model guys are usually broke kids who just want the v8 or old guys who say "I don't want the bells and whistles and doo-hickeys'
That's a very ignorant steteotype.

agreed. im 28, and i could easily afford a gt350r, but i wanted a car now(seen horror stories about ordering and delivery) and a DD that i can throw a turbo on and murder people on the street in a stock appearing car. personally, the base has more shit than i even want in a "drivers car." then again i prefer my manual steering, manual brakes, gutted and caged classic over anything else.

all of them
I opted for the base GT PP because i wanted to customize it my way. Added tom-top for navigation, Katzkin leather from the Shelby web site,GT350 steering wheel, Steeda clutch spring, and a Cat back. Im still shopping for wheels and tires. And this is my 19th mustang, so i have a plan. lol

Maybe the reason more of us older guys don't want the bells and whistles is because like OP and a couple others in this thread we already knew we didn't want them when we were in our 30's either. When we were in our teens and 20's, driving was only about driving and riding around with a few friends, and that was sufficient. There was a certain independence about it back then that is now being sacrificed to the leash of unlimited connectivity.

To which . . . at the last job before I ultimately retired, getting into my car at the end of the day meant getting away from everybody who might want another slice of my time right then and enjoying the drive home the same way I did 40 years previously.

Lmao, broke kids' base V8 costs more than your EB. Also, most people choose base V8 because it's a great modding platform and allows for a blank canvas. Additionally, it's usually their 2nd or 3rd toy.

I agree 100%, growing up in my 20's driving a big block 4 speed with no power steering or air conditioning was the norm for high performance power. Over the years I stayed with the same basic equipment in other muscle cars I've owned.
My last sports car was a Superformance Cobra replica, also a big block with a manual transmission, no A/C, no anti lock brakes, no power steering, no radio, but did have a soft top and a heater....:D And yes there were no bells and whistles but a driving experience like no other.....

I'm with a lot of others here. When I bought my 14 GT, I purposely bought a base model even though I could afford the premium. I found that on past vehicles with a lot of comfort and convenience options, I just didn't use them plus like others have said, the more electronic stuff you have, the more chances of big money repairs down the road and I tend to keep vehicles for quite awhile.

I just used the select shift button on my automatic for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I've had this car for 2 1/2 years. I have never changed the steering feel option from the factory setup. I just don't use or feel the need to use all of that stuff.

The only thing I would like to have is the sirius radio but I don't feels it's worth the $300 + to buy the parts to upgrade so I just keep what I have. I listen to the exhaust more than anything anyway.

The Mustsng GT,,,,,,it is a modern Muscle-car(a pony car). It's not a luxury coup/sedan. It was never meant to have adaptive cruise, cross traffic monitor, and all the driving nannies. I truly believe that is most of the QC problems ford is going through. Buyers believed they were buying a luxury automobile and it's not. Mustangs are ment to be a little rough around the edges, they were made to get in shut up and have fun! Go base All day long.
