I've considered upgrading the base audio in the Mustang GT. Mainly just installing a subwoofer in the back, and wonder if that would help the main sound. Does the unit provide enough watt for this to work?

Anyone had success with this?

In regards to the sub, you will need an amp to power it. The radio will not have enough power to even move the sub.

I did a Rockford setup all the way around. 2 amps one for the speakers and another for the sub. Replaced all the speakers with Rockford too. Setup was $1000 installed. Nothing crazy or obnoxious. Sounds 1000x better than stock.

I installed a Kenwood 900W 5 channel amp, replaced all four speakers with Focals in the rear and components up front. Added a 10" J&L micro-sub to finish it all up. Sounds much better now.:headbang:

OP, do yourself a favor and get an amp and do the speakers too. You'll not regret it.

I was hoping to do a not so expensive upgrade to the speakers, and simply add a subwoofer. I was hoping the base unit could support it.

I installed a Fosgate self powered 12" sub and it made a big difference. You'll have to run a power wire from the battery to the trunk and splice into the rear speaker wires but it isn't that bad. You can get one for less than $200 and if you research installing it on the forums its relatively an easy upgrade.

Nope, OP you need an amp to power a sub. It sounds like you may need some help with this so you will need the following:

1. Amplifier installation kit (RCA's, speaker wire, power wire, ground wire, remote turn-on, misc. connectors)
2. Amplifier (Monoblock for the sub: get one with the same or higher rms output to your sub's rms at the desired impedance)
3. Subwoofer (if you plan to run one sub, get a dual 2 ohm and wire it down to 1 ohm total impedance)
4. Enclosure
5. Line Out Converter (to grab signal from your stock radio)

The cheapest and easiest route will be to buy a self-powered unit where the amp, sub, and box are all in one. Now you'd only have to worry about the install kit and LOC. Up to you.

I plan on going this route, actually.

I did that with the Rockford Fosgate 10 inch self powered sub. It sounds great. Sub was about $165. Once you add the sub, the crappy stock speakers don't sound so crappy.

Sub also has a nice small footprint in the trunk. It does not take up a lot of space.

Did you have the premium? Just asking because i've been looking at the component Rockfords to install too but haven't found a post with anyone having installed anything like that xD. And if so, where did you put the tweeters location?

I put the tweeters in the factory location. I didn't have to cut, dremel or drill anything. I used the rockford t1 6.5 components. Left the 3.5 speaker alone and drilled new holes for the 6.5s.

Calling out OKC #1 spot after axle back install.
All you need is a small amp 300w amp and a solid sub. The bandpass boxes toby speakers makes are top notch! I had an older "sheriff" sub in my old 93 and the sound out of that thing was amazing. When I do decide to upgrade my sub i am definitely going with a low sheriff or a low camfire.
