So there's another thread discussing lug studs and the particulars of R/R to swap or install them.

The topic of the thrust washer came up.

Running the part number on my 2016 GT350 it comes up as "does not fit" so I have several questions.

1) Do any of the model years of GT350 utilize a thrust washer?
2) If not, is it beneficial (seems to be many threads across multiple forums about benefits ranging from keeping the axle nut from backing out to longevity of the hubs)
3) Would it be disruptive in any way (i.e. I don't think it would negatively impact tightening down the axle nut, but just checking to ensure).

Pic for reference.

I stopped by the dealer today to pick up the nuts for my upcoming job and we looked into the washer. Looking up parts diagram/break down using my VIN for a 2017, that washer was no where to be found in the schematics.

I guess I'll find out when I take it apart for sure, but will most likely plan on not putting one in if it isn't there. Doesn't seem like anyone is gonna make an argument towards adding one arbitrarily.

As a side note, I read alot of recommendations on here about adding some thread locker to the nut. These brand new nuts clearly have some type of thread locker or material inside the threads. Don't know if folks are taking that into consideration and still adding thread locker on a new nut or not. Just a thought.

I should receive the nuts this week, I didn't get new when I swapped axles, but after looking at the manual (and some of the digging on this stuff) I see that them backing off is a noteworthy problem, so I figured I'll order some new ones. Once I get them I'll look, if it's like the stuff I've seen in the past, it's dried out and I'm not sure about the strength. Some of these parts sit on shelves or in warehouses for a long time. I have no problems putting lots of thread locker on something that's exposed and readily accessible for all manner of "come loose" approaches (especially when it's something that doesn't get fastened or removed often). I may add some high strength just for belt and suspenders.

Red thread locker and 200 lbs + 1/8 turn. Mark with paint pen when you're done.

Itll still back off

Yeah, I’ll be doing the thread locker too.

200 lbs?? Uuuhhh, where’d you get that number? These aren’t GForce shafts that call for 200. It’s 98 + 45°. I’ve heard 150 + 1/8 from a few, but 200 +??

Iirc Kelly from bmr in a thread. Do a search maybe it was 175 +1/8

When I did mine I have a 28" tq wrench, then required my 28" breaker plus jack handle for the stretch. It required planting 1 wheel and full grip of parking brake.

I'll see if I can track it down

Edit: 150 + 1/8

All apart. No washer. In fact, after comparing our half shaft to the pics from the other cars with them, I don’t even see how/where it would fit. I’m putting back together as is.

And we hear stories about that nut coming loose and causing noises and other issues. Ppppffftttt…don’t know how the heck that happens. My suckers were on there. Broke dang 1/2” breaker bar that I’ve been using for 30 years trying to get the nut loose.

Man, that's worse than the rack/pinion bolts.

I wonder if Nordlock would make an appropriate washer

I installed GT350 axles in my 2015 GT a few years back, the stamped spring steel washers ended up in the scrap metal barrel. Never looked back.
The original OEM GT spring steel washers had evidence of fretting @ 35,000 miles.

It'll "still back off" because that's the wrong setting. 98 ft-lbs and 45 degrees, as specified by Ford. and it'll stay on just fine. Anything else is asking for problems:

Idk in 10k ish miles the ref marks are still aligned. Most seemed to have gone to 150 + an 1/8th

Ford tech told me the same when mine were noisy, crank em to 150 and see if it stops, they didn't.

in my brain, I'm wondering juuusssttt how much difference could possibly exist between 98 + 45° and 150 + 1/8??

Regardless, I know what I'm using.

So has it been concluded that the thrust washer being discussed is NOT on any if he S550 GT350's - but does exist on other S550 platforms?

Im trying to figure out if it does not exist - why and what major difference where it is not needed on the GT350, but is not only needed on the other platforms, but does cause interferences resulting in DTC codes when it fails or if it's missing.

Any thoughts?

No codes that im aware of. I put mine back in because there was one there when i took it apart.

I cant figure out wtf it actually is supposed to do besides "click" when things have slacked some lol
