I noticed recently a metallic sounding 'clunk' when changing between 'Park', and 'Reverse' or 'Drive' on my auto.

There's quite a lot of discussion of this over on the US side of the forum, but wondered if anyone here had experienced this. Seems most likely the problem lies with the output flange on the transmission.

I'll be popping into my dealer tomorrow so will bring this up but I'm bracing myself for the "it is a normal characteristic of the vehicle" line which is what some have been told in the US!

Not had this yet; only 800 miles on car. Will listen out.

Yes ..I have this exact noise! Dealer said they put it on the ramp but could not hear it!!
However they said they would get in contact with Ford technical this was only a few days ago .. I will report the reply when I get it

Also many thanks to @John557 that link is just what we need

Mine also feels like a rear wheel is reluctant to turn or slips it also feels like the rear diff is not turning or sticking on one side it's most noticeable when cold and turning slowly!
Anyone else get that?

Showed dealer today, so it is logged. They're gonna have a look when I can afford some time to get it to them. Reading the US threads, it seems a pretty straight forward fix, just a case of getting dealerships to agree on a diagnosis.

I've had the second one but put it down to surprising the limited slip diff (when cold and turning slowly).

The most successful fix for the first noise seems to be packing the splines of the propshaft (the Americans want to call it a driveshaft) with decent grease. The metallic 'ping' would suggest something is dry that shouldn't be. Haven't seen much in the posts to suggest an actual gearbox or diff fault.

I sent my dealer some job sheets from the US forum which they sent on to Ford who have asked the dealer to try to identify where the clonk is coming from using some sort of listening device and head phones!

I do have the clunk. Not convinced it's a problem as most RWD autos I've had have made similar noises. We'll see what Ford say.

No. I'm not taking mine in until they've learnt what they should be doing; or it needs a service whichever is the sooner. I've only done 2000 miles. Definite metallic ping/clunk when going from F to R and vice versa. Trouble is then I start driving and forget all my troubles. Has yours got any worse?

A 'Ford Tech' had a listen to mine a couple of weeks ago and the case has been taken up a level. Think it might still be a while before I'm offered a fix as it was seen as not detrimental to the driveability of the car

What I noticed is that it's best not to press the button to hard, just gently squeeze it, when pressing it down to hard it feels like the shift-stick is stuck.

2, when reversing or putting it back in to drive, hold the break until you feel the car wants to take off. Never had this on my previous automatic's but this one requires me to wait a few seconds.
Also most noise comes from letting the breaks go imo.

Notes, I think you're experiencing something different. I know what you're saying, but the clunk I'm talking about is different and occurs as drive engaged or disengages or changes from forward to reverse and is heard even when brakes are firmly on. It's quite a high pitched noise like a hammer on a chisel only not just as loud!

Normally there would be a bit of a muted thud as drive engages which I think is normal if not excessive.

Noticed this on mine today too. 1200 miles in. Sounds like there's a gnome underneath the car pinging an anvil with his little hammer....

Anyone got any sense out of Ford on the issue?

I never noticed it until someone on hear pointed it out on one of my videos:lol::lol:

Hasn't got any worse, doesn't sound like any things broken, and only seems to do it when transmission is cold....

Got 3 years warranty so I ain't gonna worry about it unless it gets worse:thumbsup:
