Anyone wish they'd gone with an R instead?

I was asking for an R when I placed my order back in August, but was told I couldn't have it. That dealership has allocation for 10+ non R but only one R, and the owner of the dealership is getting it. Guess I can't really fight that. I was also told that they had allocation of one Ford GT years back and the owner claimed it too!

Keep in mind that in recent months many SVT dealers in Canada are getting a second R model allocation so I suggest that you check with your local SVT dealer and see if they are getting a second allocation?

If not check with other SVT dealers in Canada unfortunately some of which are asking crazy dollars like one in Vancouver who were asking for 150K.

Good luck and don't give up as there are ~30 SVT dealers in Canada.

I have no interest in an R. I will not likely track my car often and I enjoy the comforts in my tech pack. Additionally I would stress over getting curb rash on my wheels. When I ordered my car, I was told by my dealer I could get an, "R" if I wanted and at MSRP, which they more than honored my my GT350 Tech car. So an R was a very real option that I felt fine foregoing. I remain convinced that I made a wise (for me) choice.

Interesting that you asked if anyone wished they had gone with an R model instead of a GT350 and then admitted that you wished you had gone with an R model over a base GT350 and go on say you have no regrets without even having driven the R model.

How can you have no regrets when you have not even seen an R model let alone drive the R model?

I can tell you there is obviously a difference in performance between the two cars and as we all know in the purchase price as well so that is all subjective.

If your mind is racing over having the carbon fiber wheels scratched or stolen you obviously have made the right decision to go with the GT350.

Great to hear that you adore your GT350 and if you get a chance to drive an R model I suggest that after you drive the R model you will be motivated to move over to an R model in future years of course all subject to being a pure Shelby enthusiast and the purchase price at the time.

The same way I knew I wanted a GT350 after test driving an M4 and C63 S without having driven one. We all know what we want, and the decision here isn't that complicated. I admired the R until I took delivery of my Track Pack, that admiration has faded a bit since then.

If I lived near a track I could frequent the added performance in the R makes sense, but I live right outside of St Louis where road courses hardly exist. I'll rarely if ever push to the point where the difference between a non R and an R could be found, not to mention my skill not being there. If I chose an R I would be giving up the convenience of two back seats and I have two sons, so it doesn't make a lot of sense for me.

I've messaged with someone that is local that will be taking delivery of an R, and we plan to meet up. There is no doubt I will love seeing it, I'm an enthusiast at heart, but deep down I know it doesn't fit for me and it doesn't have to because I love what I have.

There isn't enough difference in the performance of a GT350R and the car I ordered to be a concern to myself. When I get my car on the track and determine if it needs upgrades for performance, I can get it extremely close to the level of an R without spending much more $$.

It was my understanding that they had ano allocation. However I have not checked back. I know the first two that were ordered through them were both tech packages. At best, I would be conjecturing to say yes. But again it was my understanding.

GT Dave: My question (to sell CF take offs and Cup 2s) is perhaps rhetorical. But for those who might have chosen an R, but the money was the issue, this is one way to deal with the money.

Regarding the weight advantage, the CF wheels are about half the total. However, the aluminum wheels I ordered from this forum are supposed to be 23 pounds vs 16 for CF. So the actual reduction of weight loss is about half. (Ford seems to have a high baseline for wheel weights.) In other words, of the ~100 pounds of weight reduction, with aluminum wheels, I should still see ~75 pounds weight reduction.

Just offering a devil's advocate idea for those wondering whether they bought the right model. I know my intended use is not the norm (just track use), I am sure everyone with any GT350 model will love it on the street and track.:ford:

Which wheels did you decide to go with? I am considering a wheel swap as well. Have a 2016 GT350 Track on order and the one thing I really wish I had off the R is the CF wheels for the weight savings, but also because 70-80% of the performance advantage of the R is probably the wider rubber and the softer compound of the Cup 2 vs. the Super Sports.

We all know tires make a HUGE difference in performance so if you can find a really light weight wheel that looks great and is 19 x 11 front and 19 x 11.5 with the 305 / 315 size Cup 2 tires IMHO I think you will have closed a huge part of the gap while having the meanest looking GT350 around. I have never been a fan of big spoilers on any car so I prefer the Track pack spoiler to the R anyway and I don't really need a lower front chin spoiler for 95% street driving. Can't go wrong either way as both cars are amazing and we are all incredibly lucky to even have this choice! :cheers:

I've passed one about 4 GT350 MSRP deals, because I know myself, and I would be happy with the GT350 for a month or so, and then the nagging in my mind would start about it not being an R, and it would bother me. Just how to know yourself. So I'm going to wait...and wait...and wait until I can find an R.

Search for this thread. They are making spun forged aluminum wheels that are supposed to be identical to the CF wheels (other than materials). They have a few colors. I pulled the trigger on a set of these so I can get some Hoosiers ready.

I have seen a more recent post of wheels a bit lighter ~20 or 21 pounds in R fitment, altho a different style.


Now, if I only had a car to put them on....They tell me I may actually get one someday.......and the wait continues.....:headbonk:

Search for this thread. They are making spun forged aluminum wheels that are supposed to be identical to the CF wheels (other than materials). They have a few colors. I pulled the trigger on a set of these so I can get some Hoosiers ready.

I have seen a more recent post of wheels a bit lighter ~20 or 21 pounds in R fitment, altho a different style.

If you read the fine print - they are not identical to the R wheels. The spokes are concaved a bit differently. Unless it's changed recently.

I much prefer the non-R GT350 that why I ordered one. Backseats, cleaner lines (especiallly in the traditional white with blue stripes), and most importantly no worry about those carbon fiber wheels made of diamonds just waiting to be ripped off - when I first heard the price of each wheel last summer I wanted nothing to do with the R. It was bad enough with the Laguna Seca at $1,200 per wheel. I'm after a Flat Plane Crank V8, MagneRide, 6 speed, Recaro race seats etc, Michelin PSS tires - cup tires have me running too - did the R compounds - 7,000 miles of fun and then 2grand to replace.

After having the unique opportunity to drive BOTH cars, the R and non-R at Sebring (was there for both days of the Track Tour), I can honestly say that the tires absolutely make the difference on track. Your average driver would not notice the difference between the showroom floor R and a Track Pack on a set of same sized R-comps.
