It sucks. Those of us in collision repair are fixing cars that we would never have had to before. Replacing the whole side of a car. It's because when a $60,000 car gets wiped out all the insurance companies see is the bottom line. They don't care that the car will never be the same all they see is their investment. Damage that would totall a brand new $40,000 car we still fix.

Uh .. all of them?

They are insuring your vehicle for ACV. They will total only after damage estimate meets ~75% of ACV. They don't care how long you are without your car, or if you have to see a shrink for the withdrawal symptoms while waiting on repairs. They may subsidize a rental car if you need one.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. With enough time, money and incentive you can rebuild anything. Now the legality of splitting chassis' makes me wonder if that's not over the line a little.

I was just hoping maybe it was his companies policy to only speak to the police in accidents or something for liability reasons. It was definitely a jerk move though.

It takes two days to get the police report and the officer could not give me his name or any other personal information so my insurance can't do anything about contacting his companies insurance until they get the police report.

That stinks. Exchange of insurance information should be mandatory immediately (especially for the not-at-fault driver to get the other info). I make it a priority to get that and give it to the other driver on crashes I investigate. They are already being extremely inconvenienced so it should be as easy it can be.
