Why pay higher prices for other synthetics when Pennzoil Ultra tests better, has a great warranty and is cheaper??

I pay a few bucks more for AMSOIL and in my mind it's worth it. I don't know if Pennzoil Ultra tests better, though. At the end of the day, realistically, for engines like these as long as you go with the a top oil you will be fine when it comes to performance driving.

Put in Motul 8100 5w40. I'll be using it or Amsoil 0w40 going forward.

Mobile 1 is out due to recent reformulation.

Side note. Anyone have a link to that half funnel looking thing to help not spill oil everywhere when removing oil filter. It's gonna be first time changing on s550. Last time paid. Gonna do myself from now on.

I did the 1 gallon zip lock bag trick. Contained most of the oil dripping from the oil filter which would have been a mess if I didn't have it. Poor design on Ford's part for the filter removal...

Just out of curiosity, why does it seem like some of you guys (many even) are straying from Ford's recommended oil weight for the Coyote? I thought it was 5W-30. I know it says what it is right on the oil fill cap. I'll have to check later as I'm not near my car at the moment. Just wondering though.

In my eyes, I have no problem putting a different brand of oil in than Ford uses (I've been using Mobil 1) but I think I'd be pretty hesitant to change the recommended oil weight. Plus, if I'm understanding correctly, that could easily void your warranty if something detrimental were to happen.

Please enlighten me. I'm getting ready to do my 5th oil change early next week (coming up on 25,000 miles). I've been using Mobil 1 since the first change at 5,000 miles. While the poll on this thread shows that this is a popular choice, I've now seen a few people drop some hints about Mobil reformulating, implying the oil is no longer as good as it once was. Wouldn't mind some elaboration on that point as well if possible as I need to make a decision and buy oil (and a filter) asap!

It's 5w-20 in the USA. I think 5w-30 in Canada or the UK. Either weight is fine IMO. I use 5w-20.

About the Mobil 1 "reformulation". That happened years ago...

It's still a good oil. Stick with any of the quality brands listed in the poll and you'll be fine. Bobistheoilguy.com has quite the archive of oil information if you want to research.

I was told that it happened again, and then dropped the GTR and BMW from the complying makes/formulations, etc. There was a bunch of talk about it that I read through.

I'm impressed with Pennzoil Ultra Platinium.
There was once a day when I'd use almost anything BUT pennzoil.

BUT....Shell Oil bought Pennzoil back in 2011. They have totally reformulated Pennsoil products.
I'm especially interested in their new "Pure Plus Technology"

Proprietary process in which Shell Oil creates the oil base from pure Natural Gas.
Pennzoil claims Ultra Platinium keeps pistons and other oil lubriated parts cleaner then any other oil on the market.

Maybe some of the below is simply marketing and corporate deals...but for what its worth:

BMW used to use Castrol....since 2012 they have used relabeled Pennzoil Ultra as their "BMW brand oil"
SRT recommends Pennzoil Ultra
Ferrari recommends Pennzoil Ultra
Hennessey Performance recommends Pennzoil

Real numbers are where it counts, Right!?
The Volatility Burn Off (NOACK) [% mass loss, 250 degrees C or 482 degrees F @ 1 hour] tests are very good on Pennzoil Products.

Quaker State Ultra (Quaker State, like Pennzoil is owned by Shell Oil) at 8.8%
Amsoil OE at 10.9%
Royal Purple at 10.9%

I agree with you. A Toyota Avalon engine is not the same thing as a 5.0 Coyote or 2.3 EcoBoost.
I'm only trying to convey that 99% of these oil threads have no real data to validate if "oil A" is better then "oil B".

I actually fall into the camp of over thinking which oil to use.
I'm a car enthusist, I 100% get it....I want to run the best oil I can for my Mustang.

If you study VOA and UOA on sites such as bobistheoilguy.com you realize that most oils within a given spec are very very similar regardless of brand.

But, I still try to find some differentiating real data to validate why to choose brand A vs brand B.

For me Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum 5W-20 is the oil I choose to run in my Coyote. Why? It has a great additive package (verified by VOA) and performs very well on UOA tests and the NOACK (% burn off) test.

To quote my earlier post (#42):

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Pennzoil Platinum base stock is made from Natural Gas. This is a new patented process that makes Pennzoil Platinum products very pure and also different.

Shell Oil claims that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum keeps pistons 25% cleaner then the leading synthetic oil (Mobil 1).

The NOACK tests are very good on Pennzoil Platinum Products:

Pennzoil Ultra = 6.6%
Quaker State Ultra (Quaker State, like Pennzoil is owned by Shell Oil) = 8.8%
Amsoil OE = 10.9%
Royal Purple = 10.9%
Mobil 1 = 10.1%
Castrol Edge = 11.1%

6.6% burn off for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum vs 10.1+ % burn off on the others listed above. That's a big advantage for Pennzoil Platinum in my book.
Pennzoil Ultra also tests very well on UOA data posted on bobistheoilguy.com.

Also, Pennzoil will warranty all oil lubricated parts of your engine for 500,000 miles if you use Pennzoil Ultra! You just have to start only using Pennzoil Ultra before 75,000 miles. See their website for the details.

All this PLUS the fact that Pennzoil Ultra is available for $22.47 for 5 quart jugs at Walmart.com ($4.49 quart).

I agree will almost everything you've said with one exception. Pennzoil Ultra does not have particularly good NOACK numbers. The 6.6% you quote is from some old data sheets. The current Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20 is somewhere around 10 to 12 percent. Amsoil is the only 5W-20 I know of below 8 percent.

I particularly agree with your opinion that the vast majority of people can get by with almost any reasonable quality oil changed at proper intervals. I also overthink my oil choices. I was running mixtures of Redline street and race oils in my cars. Now I run M1 10-30 in my wife's Ecoboost Explorer Sport and Pennzoil Yellow Bottle in everything else.
