AC Compressor belt Install

Anyone have a good Go By for this? I was installing my new battery and I noticed my AC belt was frayed. It has been crooked for some time now. I was hoping it would straighten itself out, but guess not. I went ahead and cut it off so it wouldn’t come apart and make a potential mess if other things. Anyhow, I have an 8 rib setup with the added drive shaft pulley. Any help much appreciated!

Obviously, you need to remove the other belts first. I've done the AC belt enough times now that I can do it by just muscling it on there. You need a long breaker bar - preferable a ratchet, to turn the crankshaft. put the new belt around the AC pulley, and behind the crank pulley. Then, use your right hand to turn the engine over with the ratchet while you guide the belt onto the ribs with your left hand, keeping pressure on the belt the whole time.

Because you have that 8 rib pulley on there, you likely wont be able to do it the way that the service manual recommends, which is to use zip ties to guide the belt onto the crank pulley.

Be shure to only rotate the pulley in the same direction as normal engine rotation. Turning it backwards has the potential to cause the timing chain to jump teeth.

I think I have that thing. Tried it and I got my ass kicked. Couldn’t get it done that way or any other way. I put the main drive belt back on and the blower belt on and made sure everything worked and sounded good and I like fuck it! Guess I’ll be without AC unless I take it to my mechanic. Arms are scratched up, have to be up at 3am, and it 10 pm…..Smgdh….banged out!

Yes, you cannot get the belt over the AC pulley, without first going over the crank pulley and flattening the belt out behind it, just like he does in the video. Only turn the engine clockwise - the direction it rotates when running.

This can be done by one person, but if you have help it is a lot easier. You don't need any other tool. The service manual tells you to use zip ties to hold the belt on the crank pulley.

And also, I have that 8 rib crank pulley, so I can’t really get around back or the zip tie method. I’m thinking I will have to take that 8 rib pulley off and put it on. If anyone has pulled this off with an 8 rib crank pulley let me know 😉

Yep. 12:1 compression will have that effect. Make sure its in neutral. If you haven't replaced your spark plugs in a while, this is a good opportunity to knock out both items. The engine is way easier to turn over when the spark plugs are out.

lol just had them done this past summer lol it's always something! nothing is ever easy
