I hate to revive an really old thread, but I happened to be googling information on this subject. I have a 2019 that does the same thing in normal mode from 5th to 6th gear. The rpm's drop and you can even hear my exhaust sound like its struggling and losing power. Only from 5th to 6th. In any other drive modes no issues. I even got a Ford Performance calibration tune and it still does it. I never get codes so I figured it was what others said.... converter lock up.
Yep old thread; after reading through it it was prior to my own 10R80 eventually failing. It was also having the harsh shifts leading up to a valve body replacement and software reflash with latest software as well as proper relearn procedure.

Also to note:
1) M6G members eventually found that the 10R80 was coming straight from the factory low on fluid.

2) I found that the 10R80 has specific dipsticks depending on vehicle applications.

3) Reflashing the software won’t fix a hardware failure not will resetting the KAM. Many Dealerships will want to reflash the software and send people in their way.

4) Valve body failure was most common issue.

5) Internal ‘clutch’ assembly was a known failure too, but not as common as the valve body.

This thread is BIG and contains all of the 10R80 facts, diagnosis and various repairs M6G members have gone through and other info about the unit overall. The first page contains a LOT of the proper facts and hyperlinks/attachments.

I have this exact issue right now with 5th gear. About to do a KAM reset. How did you end up fixing yours and what was the problem?
Unfortunately, it is not fixed and at 60K miles, still does that hang-up when shifting from 3-5 in drive and when is S or S+ /Track mode, the 4-5 shift is very hard as if I got hit from behind. I have had the fluid level checked multiple times and there are no issues with that. I had 6 quarts of fluid replaced around 47K miles and then another 7 quarts of fluid flushed and replaced at 57K miles and it did not change anything.

The latest TSB 22-2428 is supposed to fix a lot of issues with the 10R80 transmission. I have extended warranty through Ford ESP so I will take advantage of that and take my car in to have the process done and hopefully that will fix this issue.

I wouldn't say rough but I've notice that the computer seems to be confused on whether to lock the converter or not. Its more of a quick engagement or at times a slight hesitation. It gives you a herky/jerky feel at times. I noticed it both pre-tune and post-tune. For me its most noticeable when I part throttle it but not enough throttle to go into a passing gear. Hope that makes sense.
This. Perfect description. I once read that either the 3-4 or the 4-5 shift involves the converter while other shifts involve solenoids. I wonder if this is the reason for the difference?
