I don’t like the idea of start/stop and it’s turned off on my car and I ordered something to turn it off on my wife’s car. I have to think it increases wear and it doesn’t save that much gas for my driving habits.

I've had a '17 and now a '19 F150 Ecoboost 3.5 with auto start/stop. It's pretty close to seamless and uses a ton of factors to decide if it wants to turn off including engine temperature, climate control status, battery charge, steering wheel angle and more. I'm also confident it saves fuel, because otherwise why would the feature be there? With as advanced as engines are now you are not wasting as much fuel as you you used to on engine startup. I want to say the oiling system is designed with this in mind because you're supposed to wait 15 minutes before checking oil level for it to fully drain back to the pan. I also don't think it's as big of a longevity issue as others believe, but over 8 years there has to be some impact on maintenance of the start.

However, I have it disabled. It's really annoying in the summer when it's hot and you have the A/C on to stop at a redlight and have the truck turn off and then slow down the blower and A/C.

My brother started doing on his Forester several years ago. He is meticulous about keeping records (his was a stick). He saved almost 2 MPG. I have it on my Explorer and hate the auto shutoff. I can afford another $100 in gas per year vs the annoyance.

My wife had this start/stop feature in her 2018 Mercedes GLC(the small SUV but not the smallest) - it malfunctioned on her several times while driving causing the motor to stop running when it shouldnt have stopped. For example she was exiting a highway and on the OFF ramp while doing about 45 the motor turned off. This went to the dealer for service, they replaced the secondary starter and a few months later it happened again. Rinse and repeat - a new secondary starter and I'll give one guess as to what happened next?
Original secondary starter replaced
Replacement secondary starter replaced
2nd replacement secondary starter replaced
Vehicle traded in...
GLCs have had soooo many issues.

2mpg would save me almost 3k a year at current prices on my daily drivers.
