47, 800 miles and it's shot. Is this a thing with these cars? My 2004 work van has 311k miles on it abf the A/C has never even had to be topped off.

Failed how? Believe me, there are " good" ways to fail and bad ways. Do you plan to make the repairs yourself?

Compressor leaked. Threw oil all over the front of the block

Well, that's certainly the bad way to fail.
For a proper repair you are going to need to replace the compressor, condenser and receiver dryer (or whatever ford uses for one) and probably the orifice/expansion valve. You will also need to flush all of the lines and the evaporator.
At least the dash doesn't have to come out...

I did this last year at 31,000 miles and ordered the UAC kit from RockAuto, and the A/C tension kit from LMR, and had a local shop recharge it for me. The hardest part was flushing the system because of the mess it can make if you're not careful. They sent me an extra dryer and I had to take the A/C tensioner off for the supercharge I just installed. I'm just really happy I didn't have to take the dash out, I've seen those threads and they seem like a nightmare.

I won't attempt any repair like this. Too old. My fingers and my brain dont function like they did when I was a young hot rodder. He knows what to do. Glad I have a dependable mechanic in my corner who I also consider my friend :)

If you're referring to the dash, yeah, I'd guess a couple of days and a couple thousand dollars.
Unfortunately, what you have will still be about the same. It's a lot of work to get the compressor and condenser out. Not to mention flushing everything else out.

I had the evaporator replaced in my white 17 gt, black 17 gt and I’m pretty sure my current 16 gt. I got rid of the black one because the ac started acting up. It started randomly blowing hot, then it would only work while moving, then I recharged it and the compressor would make noise and drag the rpm’s down and still didn’t blow cold even though the head pressures were fine. I could tell it was about to go so I preemptively got rid of it. I hate that it had everything I wanted too. My 16 gt is cool but doesn’t have all the goodies I wanted.
