Morning all. I bought a 2018 GT Premium in early November and took it for its first road trip the day after Thanksgiving. After cruising for about 2 hours in 6th gear, and on cruise control, the wife and I decided to stop for a refreshment break. Entered the turning lane to exit the interstate and the gear shift would not move....stuck in 6th gear. Coasted to bottom of off-ramp and finally got the car in neutral after 5 mins or so...still would not go into any gear but 6th. Called a tow truck and had it towed to nearest Ford dealership (thankfully only 2.5 miles away). They are tearing down the transmission to diagnose the cause of the failure. I have seen many reports of broken shift forks that have occurred when hard shifting but haven't seen any reports that replicate the issue I experienced. The service manager said he thinks it is in fact the shift forks but I wonder if it could be the synchronizer since the shifter was frozen in place? I bought the car with 9,500 miles on it and it had 9,950 at the time of the issue.

Update on issue: got a call from the dealership yesterday that the Mustang was ready for pick up....transmission had been rebuilt and reinstalled and a test drive had been performed. Showed up today (2 hour drive) to get it and didn't make it 10 feet before the transmission jumped out of 1st gear.....would not stay in 1st gear. Went inside and got the service manager....he drove the car and said, "Yes, it won't stay in first gear....2nd through 6th are fine!" He stated that they had the transmission sent to another Ford dealership to be rebuilt as his shop didn't have the expertise to do it, and the shift fork and other parts were replaced. After discussing the way ahead, he recommended I drive the car to the dealership (2 hours away) where I bought it and ask them to replace the transmission. I drove it the 2 hours and the shop at the dealership where I bought it said they could fix it and that they had a transmission specialist that worked in the shop. I talked to him directly and he said this is only the 3rd new manual transmission he has worked on for the 18/19 year models. So, we will see what he finds out and whether or not he can fix it. I am amazed at the lack of quality control at the dealership in GA....even the poor guy who drove the car from the back of the shop to me said it wouldnt stay in gear.....not sure how they deemed it acceptable on the test drive after reinstall.

OMG that really sucks. I`m 60 years old and have had problems with every car dealer on earth. I can`t believe that this crap still goes on today. You got get nasty with them even know that being nice is the way it should done.
You got to demand a new trans and tell them your calling BBB or talking to Ford directly if they can`t fix this shit. I hope you got this thing fixed by now. Best wishes

Got a call from the dealership....the parts we have been waiting on came in and guess what....wrong parts!! Unbelievable. Could be up to another week.....that would make it 6 of 9 weeks of ownership in the shop.

Another update: As the Ford Turns....or more truthfully, doesnt turn:

Was told last week that the correctly ordered parts were to be in today....delayed due to holidays and Ford's logistics. Got a text today from the service manager stating that they hoped to have the parts in by Thursday....first I head of that. I asked questions and was told parts were no longer on back order. What? First time I have heard that as well. Here we are on 7 Jan 20 and still no Mustang. I bought the car on 8 Nov 19 and the transmission went out on 29 Nov 19.....Ford has had it since (2 different dealerships).

I asked the service manager why I can take my truck to a local transmission shop and can have the transmission fully rebuilt in 4-days? His words were, "The local tranmission shop doesnt have to deal with Ford!" Really gives me a warm fuzzy about Ford and their operation. I could understand if this was a local "mom and pop" shop but this is Ford....a multi-billion dollar company who does this daily....why can't they get this right?

I am extremely frustrated and aggravated by this....going on week 6 with no actual estimated completion date. Ford did pay my December payment and I have asked for reimbursement for my January payment as well. That helps, but I would rather have my car.

better yet, Ford should cut you a $3000 voucher for a Tremec XL and another voucher for $800 for shop labor to have your choice of shop do the retrofit. It really is astounding why spare parts are so difficult to source. It's the curse of just-in-time ordering/manufacturing.

They have provided a rental the entire time....the local dealership is trying hard to take care of me but dealing with Ford (corporate) is not very user friendly

Sounds like shift forks, or could be a failed needle nose bearing. Ain't no telling. But this is why you have a warranty.

Parts can fail randomly without you even pushing it. In my old Mitsubishi 3000gt Ive had a tooth from my differential break and shoot a hole through the bell housing. The car was going 45mph at the time.

When i took the tranny appart the diffs gear set had multiple hairline fractures because they we're cheaply made cast gears.

Ford has been having problems with the mt82. My suspicion is corporate is starving the drivetrains team for funding because they want to kill off the manuals all together so they are trying to reduce costs as much as possible.

They revised the forks in gen 3 to address customer complaints they're probably using even cheaper materials to further cut costs...

It is what it is Your warranty will replace it and just save some cash in,the future for a ben calimer trans later.

Thats absolutely unacceptable. They should have replaced the entire transmission... I dont know what the fuck that dealer is smoking, but no don't take that shit have him replace the trans. A trans rebuild is not a simple thing sounds like they got the clearances wrong thats whats causing it to pop out of gear...
