OK, hold on to your hats....

In late 2005, GM brought us a 505HP, 470 lb-ft, 3200lb Z06 which debuted as a 2006 model.

Now, a DECADE F'G later, Ford brings us a 500-ish HP; 400-ish TQ 3600LB (est) Mustang and everyone is excited. Really?

OK, you say the LS7 is 7.0L and the FPC Ford is only 5.2L. Yep, who cares? I would think that the LS7 is physically smaller and lighter than the 5.2????

So, convince me. Is Ford really moving the needle forward with a bigger, heavier motor in a porky, heavier car - a DECADE after GM? Is this progress?

I'll give in on one point (so far). I think the FPC will sound better..... that's what 10-years has brought us.
Sigh...

And they are still selling that same motor in the Z28. So what's your point again?

if everything that was done to the vette should be replicated in the Pony Car class, why is the camero still heavier than the Mustang and still running less power?

1. Tell me how much a 2015 Z06 weighs. Hint: it's a lot more than the 2006 you are choosing to use for comparison to a 2016 vehicle. You can't just ignore a decade's worth of changes to crash safety standards, etc.

2. How can you dismiss the displacement of the engine in this comparison? Ford has created a motor that not even exotics like Ferrari have pulled off (largest displacement production FPC V8 ever). It's easy to throw displacement at a problem like Chevy traditionally has. Coaxing more HP out of less displacement is a much more impressive feat.

3. Mark my words, this 5.2L motor will make WELL above 500HP... not "500-ish"
A 2013 z06 did weigh a lot less though.. 3,147 according to Car and Driver.. The new one isn't all motor and has gained about 200 pounds over c6 ZR1.

That is true. But it doesn't really matter anyway. It's a silly comparison. They are totally different types of cars, and they'll be in different price brackets too (Z06 will be much more expensive). Maybe instead the OP should be comparing Chevy's most recent offerings in the same class, which last time I checked were substantially heavier than the Mustang.

I agree, I'm just weighing in about what was said about the Vette. Neither Camaro or Mustang will ever match the high end Vette model, and that's how it should be. We'll have great competition between Mustang and Camaro though and that's all I care about. I think 2016 Camaro will be extremely stiff competition for the Mustang. GM has been pulling wonders with their performance cars.

We know the LS7 is an absolute beast and I'm sure the 5.2 will be amazing as well.

My friend just picked up a Stingray with mag-ride. It was $73k. So no sense in playing Devil's advocate, when wild speculation will do.

How about $52k for base GT350..?

Then ultimately... which one will be "funner" to drive..?

All great and valid comments. Vette and Mustang is not really a fair comparison.... I can agree with that. I still somewhat disagree with the displacement comparison. I think it may be more meaningful to talk about overall package/weight size. In other words if two comparable package and weight size engines produce XXX HP and one of them is 2L and the other is 10L, do we really care about the displacement? I contend that what we are assuming is that when you get 400 HP out of a 2L motor vs 400HP a "traditional" V8, the 2.0L is intriguing because their is an assumption that it is small/light. Back to our comparison, if we look at package size/weight/efficiency, it would seem to me the LS7 - although larger in displacement is smaller, lighter, and maybe has the same efficiency. If true, then not sure I see the relevancy of 7.0L vs 5.0L.

I concede the platform discussion - let's keep it to Camaro vs Mustang. But, regarding engines..... and trying to be truly objective, is the 5.2L really that awe inspiring? Hopefully there's a lot more to come.

Yes, I believe it is. the measure of hp/liter speaks volumes about the volumetric efficiency of the power plant.Don't get me wrong, I like GM power trains, but the Voodoo is a really cool engine.

Also, the original Z06 had much of the sound deadening removed, thinner glass and was on a brand new, all aluminum frame. By the end of the run, the z07 package was running approximately 330 lbs. The new Z06, GM's current flagship ( and a damn fine car) is 3500 and change.

Voodoo is a Wagyu steak A5 grade with a marbling value of 11.

LS7 is Carl's Jr. Western Bacon Cheeseburger.

LS7 is a good value and good regardless of price.

Voodoo is just better.
