Just a question for you guys...

I'm moving back to Japan soon (again!) and have a 2015 Mustang on hold for me over there. It has the standard 9 speaker system.

I don't have a lot of tools over there, so would only doing the JBL GTO 638 6.5" three way speakers give pretty good performance?

They don't require any drilling or anything, right? They just fit right into the stock location?

I have the shaker pro on my current 2015 here in the States and it's fairly acceptable. I have never heard the normal 9 speaker system, so I'm a little worried since the pro isn't even that great. I hope just doing the rear would help!

Any recommendations or advice?

I have a vert but from what I've read you shouldn't have an issue with the 638s in the rear. You will need to order the connectors though. Should be a decent upgrade for you.

Just to add, I have the 9 speaker system as well. The front 6.5's are low-pass filtered at the amp. There are no mids or highs in the signal.

Ajax are you still using the stock tweeters in the pillars?

Yes. I just ordered a set of GTO329'S and a set of GTO628's for the doors. Though the tweets in the 628's won't do anything, the ones in the 329's will. Plus I can always cut the wires on the 628's going to the tweeters and wire those in place of the factory tweeters. **Sorry, didn't see this was directed to Ajax.

Not a problem ktp, more input is always good. Was just worried that with so many tweeters going, the sound would be awfully bright.

I am considering just going with a good 3-piece component system and a separate midrange driver to replace the center channel. Although the center channel might benefit from a coax if the signal going there is anywhere near full range.

That is my thought so I think I'm ok with just the 3.5's delivering the highs in the front. The factory tweets don't do much anyway so I'll probably just leave them alone or even disable them if it's too much. Fading from rear (GTO638) to front (stock) there is a massive difference. Not much mids or highs in the front at all compared to the 638's. But there's no bass at all in the rear so we'll see when I get front speakers hooked up. If I can live with a lack of bass I'm sure it'll be fine.

AJAX, the GTO329's when installed in the factory speaker bracket sit up about a third of an inch higher than the OEM speaker. Does this hit the door panel? Plus, should I be worried about the impedance? Factory is 8 ohm and the JBL is 3. That's a big difference. I'd hate to smoke the amplifier. Thanks!

I just finished installing this same setup. I installed the 638's in rear with the Metra harness and JBL mounting adapters. I installed the 628's in front with the Metra/JBL adapters also. I installed the 3.5" 329's using the factory bracket and soldered new wires from the speaker terminals to the factory wiring. I needed to add the capacitor to the + lead for them to work, and I disconnected the pillar tweeters to avoid mismatched impedence. Both my stock 3.5 and tweeters are 8 ohms, so was worried about the low impedance resulting from the 3 ohm JBL midrange in parallel with the 8 ohm tweeter.

The tweeter in the 329 gives plenty of highs for my liking. I just pulled the pillar trims and disconnected the plugs. Also, the 329's are slightly taller then the factory mids and fit tight to the door panels and cause a slight bulge in the grilles but work just fine in my 2016 GT PP.

Apparently the 400A and 401A systems have different speaker impedances. Both my front and rear factory 6.5's are 4 ohms.

If the factory amp has built in cross over for all the speakers and you install a 2 way 6.5 and a 2 way 3'', does that mean that without any other alteration your new speakers are only getting the frequencies that a component 6.5 and 3'' would get and the tweeter in the middle isn't getting jack shit?????

The 6.5" mid-woofers in the doors are only tuned for low frequency. There's hardly and vocals coming from there. The 3.5" speakers get mids and highs, so the tweeter works indeed!

I hope that's what you wanted to ask, bud!
