I cannot for the life of me remember the engineer from Ford that said the future of engines coming are the four cylinder engines GOV. mandated. This has me wondering how soon and will all the cars and trucks be affected.

If anyone knows the in's and out's om this hear say please post it so we all can put our two cents worth in the mix. Thanks, and all the best, Wayne Rhodes

Yes spot on, It's "Dave Pericak" that said the future is the four cylinder, mandated by Government regulations in the near future. Thanks for the information on Dave Paricak
Again what will be the determining factor will be how the four runs, drives, breaks, verses the price of this package compared to the base v-6.

If the price is cut down to say $25000 or 26000 out the door for a new 2014 5.0 liter 6 speed stick shift manual transmission. The 3.73 rear set would seal the deal for me with my Z plan discounts. I couldn't afford to drive it but least I could say I do owned one of history's best sports car's made.

It's probably not that 4 cylinder engines will be mandated, but that the existing CAFE regulations may require manufacturers to do away with the 6/8 cylinder guzzlers in favor of 4 cylinders.

Hate to break it to the tin hats and black helicopters crowd, but "the damn gub'ment" isn't mandating any specific cylinder count.

The latests CAFE standards mandate a certain fuel efficiency record across a company's product portfolio, and the manufacturers can figure out how to hit that target however they like. It is effectively an MPG cap and trade system. A V8 that gets 35mpg will be favored over a four banger that only returns 25mpg. Period.

As a result efficiency is getting a premium. Everyone's turbocharging smaller motors. Almost everyone is moving to direct injection. Whoever didn't use continuously variable valve timing already is standardizing it. Ford's looking at a small turbo 3cyl and extensive use of aluminum for weight reduction (see: the new F-150). Hybrid options are expanding. Tesla's moved away from cylinders entirely.

The point is, there's a bunch of ways to skin the CAFE cat, and as long as it's safe for consumers the government doesn't much care about any specific technology -- or cylinder count -- it takes to get there.

Yeah no shit. I can't believe people actually believe that shit. CAFE is an MPG requirement and as long as you have a V16 hybrid that gets 34+ mpg the government doesn't give a shit

That's true the don't care how it gets there or how many cylinders is has or has not to get there. V-6 and v-8 are already running on the ragged edge of burning exhaust valve from to lean a mixture.

I do see one orange life savor for both the eight and the six. And that's dropping cylinders at cruising speeds. Chevrolet has had that system for quite some time now. ??? Just a thought.
