i had same issue, switched to the steeda assist spring and messed with seating and that seemed to help. our cars also have rev hang and that seems to be helpful and harmful depending on your shifting habits. i also noticed the faster i shift the smoother it is for some reason. also shifting at a little higher rpms seems to be smoother than shifting down low.

forsure get rid of the factory assist spring. thing makes the car feel totally disconnected and you can never feel the engagement point

I generally shift up/down through the gears without the clutch when just on casual drives. However, the trans needs to be warm. At first with the clutch, that 1st to 2nd was a bit hard to master due to the hydraulic system, the narrow ratios and a new clutch disc; also gets easier with a warm trans.

Today, I have more issues with the narrow shifter gates. I learned that neutral/default is aligned with 3rd/4th, so a little left for 1st/2nd; a little right for 5th/6th. I hardly ever go through all the gears on casual drives. Unless on a down-hill, I go 1st, 3rd, 6th. On a down hill I go 2nd, 4th, 6th. Of course all this depends on traffic, etc. Mileage has been steady at 23.5 on my 82 mile round-trip mixed commute. Car has about 6500 on the odo.

Hey everyone, new here and have a question! I just purchased a 2017 GT PP three days ago and am having a bit of an issue. I keep having a horrible time with clutch placement when I shift into second gear. Ive tried it at low RPMs, higher RPMs ect and every time, the car is jerky and reacts odd to shifting into second gear.

Ive driven manuals a while, primarily Jeeps and a Miata so I understand how the clutch works, how to use it ect but I am just having a horrible time getting second gear down. I can rev match and drop into second no issues but its the first to second gear transition thats getting me.

Would removing the clutch assist spring be any benefit to my issues? I do find it rather hard to feel the clutch engage.
Remove or replace (with the lighter steeda) the clutch assist spring. We've all gone through the same thing and it's maddening because not only is it annoying, it makes you look like a complete newb. With some of the cobblestone streets in the city where I work, I was about to rage out a few times.

Best free or $10 mod you'll ever do.

If you don't want to..I started getting better at it by focusing on that last inch or so on the way up. That's where it really grabs and is soooo touchy. Even with the spring out if I want to be more smooth I focus on that point.

This car also has a sloppy rear end. There are bushing kits that help, but it's not detrimental to your car's lifespan and it'll ease up a bit as the car breaks in. Mine took 3k miles or so and I stopped noticing whatever sloppiness remained.

I was about to go remove the spring blah blah blah... I switched from pressing the clutch in a good bit to just pressing the clutch in 1/4 of the way as if I'm racing all the time...No longer have the issue.

Coming from a z51 C6 it was pissing me off so much.

The Steeda clutch assist spring helps with feel.

The shift linkage could be loose. How much play is there? If a lot, take it in. Other solve this by replacing the shifter with aftermarket one. Also, some upgrade tranny oil. Check the Transmission forum.

I notice some clunkiness in in shifting low gears but that is apparently normal for the car. Check this thread.

Our cars unlike its predecessors have a hydraulic engagement, not the traditional cable, so when the trans is cold the slave cylinder which actually engauges the clutch, i am used to both and with the hydraulic system it takes a half second more with the clutch pedal depressed before its completely disingauged, when warm the hydraulic cylinder works almost as quick as a cable which is instant! You have to adjust the time between pressing the clutch and shifting to 2nd or 3rd. It can be mastered but it takes practice but it can be done! I dont think a trans fluid change removing fords recommended fluid is going to help his problem.

Changing to the steeda clutch spring fixed this issue for me.

Turns out my foot was leaving the pedal on the way up and the heavy assist was masking the true engagement point. The friction zone was more like a light switch.
This!. I'm 43 learned to drive on a stick at 13, but almost gave me and that wife whiplash during a test drive last week.

This is by far the most finicky, notchy manual I have ever owned. Each gear has its demands. 1-2 needs to be quick, 2-3 needs a pause or it locks out, 4-5 is prob the smoothest, 5-6 is just awkward. Tried the steeda spring but noticed tiny bit of slack in the pedal so went back to stock. Muscle memory seems to be dialed in on that.

Like others have said, this car likes to be driven hard and shifts better.

That is what works for me. Clutch in just enough to shift cleanly.

That 1st to 2nd shift is just awkward, it was with the spring in, still is with the spring out.

I think you'll get used to it...feels like a weird ratio. Been DD'ing mine for 3 months, now I just shift normal (using all 6 gears, can't get rid of muscle memory). Just need to remember to short shift 1st. Coming from diesels, push rods, and imports, this short gearing felt definitely abnormal at first, but trust me, you'll get used to it.

It was improved by leaps and bounds with the Steeda spring.
