Well after a little over 5 years, and about 60,000 miles, of pretty good luck with my manual '19 PP GT, my luck ran out (at about 7400 rpm...:)).The 2-3 shift had started to get balky at high rpm recently, and last weekend, accelerating up an on-ramp, I went from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd was no longer there. Neither was 4th. All other gears were fine; clutch was fine. I remembered the stories about the '18s and the broken shift forks, and knew that's what had happened; the 3-4 fork was gone.

The bad news - my Ford powertrain warranty had recently expired.
The good news - I had bought the Ford ESP warranty that first year, which gave coverage to 8 yrs/100,000 miles.
The better news - they are going to cover and put in a whole new transmission (which I was happy about because I was not overly confident in the dealer techs taking apart the transmission to replace the fork, and then putting it back together perfectly again).
The standard news - if they were already basically paying the labor, it made sense to go ahead and put in a new clutch, PP, and throwout bearing. So I wasn't going to get out for nothing, but it didn't hurt TOO bad.
The surprise news (at least to me) - the service writer (who's always been pretty straight, and helpful) called back later and said, after they looked at it, I should also replace the flywheel. He sent a picture (attached here). After research, I see that's not totally uncommon on these dual mass units, but I don't have enough experience in this particular area to know if what the picture shows is really that bad or not (or, if not, is it just a smart thing to do at this stage, with this transmission).

Would value some input - thanks much.

I doubt your old flywheel is bad but I've been wrong before.
Maybe they are just using that same logic of "since we're in there..."
At 60k I would be 50/50 about changing it just because the opportunity came along, I guess it would be peace of mind if nothing else.
What's the cost if they replace it?

You could ask the dealer if they have the means to resurface the factory flywheel to get rid of the hot spots on it and ensure it’s nice and smooth all the way around. If not, just spring for a new one.

You’ve got 3 sizeable hot spots that will make it slip. It also won’t break in the new clutch properly. I’d replace it.

Hard to tell from the pic, but it may have spun a little. Even with the angle of the pic, the bolts look a little wacky relative to the access holes.

Thanks, to all.

After your advice, and consideration, I told them to go ahead and replace the flywheel as well. Am hoping to get it back tomorrow for a Thanksgiving road trip. Hopefully it feels as good as it used to... :)

Always replace the flywheel when replacing the clutch. Only time not to replace the flywheel is if you can resurface it.
