2018+ pro tune (updates)

Awww okay I was not aware. For some reason I thought the tune bumped boost to 26psi or so
You may see 25-26 but it won't be sustained, just the initial boost peak. Peak number isn't as important as what psi the car maintains under WOT.

Unfortunately CA, AZ and NV do have the worst gas in the country, but Ryan knows this and does a great job of tuning accordingly. I never have major ignition corrections under heavy throttle.

I try and stick with Chevron as much as possible, but will go for Mobil, 76 and shell as a 2nd choice.

Gasoline comes from the same local refinery pipe lines such as in Long Beach where tankers from X and Y,Z go everyday to fill up and is essentially the same gas with their own more or less same additive packages that is added by the tanker drivers, the only criteria to meet is the "Top tier" which is essentially all major gas brands.

True yes it comes from a few select refineries and each manufacturer does have their own additive packages. Where we are different from the rest of the countries 91/93 is the amount of detergents, additives to reduce emissions and our ethanol content. Also CA, NV, and AZ use different Research vs motor octane ratios when calculating octane.

To get research octane, all they do is raise compression in the test engine. That’s it. So gasoline with ethanol probably performs really well in this test.

To get the motor octane, the RPM is bumped to 900 (from 600), ignition is advanced, and the key step is that they pre-heat the fuel.

The problem here is we have more ethanol, which is going to burn cooler under normal driving conditions to cool the combustion chamber and help reduce knock. When they preheat the fuel it negates the cooling effect of the ethanol to a degree.

So non-ACN 91 might be 99 research, and 83 motor. 99+83/2=91 octane

ACN 91 might be 103 research, and 79 motor. 103+79/2=91 octane.

So basically, ACN Gas probably a lower motor octane rating and a higher research octane. ACN gasoline also has other additives to reduce emissions, that might widen the discrepancy between research and motor octane even more.

To sum it all up, our 91 isn't going to be the same 91 you get in another state.

@turbotigger604

Right CA has their own requirements and we are first to get screwed on anything that's considered fun, so I guess the point was does it really matter what brand of gas you choose in your own state?

At the end of the day its probably marginal gains between manufacturers and things like how long the gas has been sitting in the tanks at the station more than what brand it is. To each their own in this situation, it might be placebo effect, but I seem to get smaller knock counts and less negative ignition correction on chevron vs other brands.

Ya one thing I won't do is go to a station that doesn't get a lot of traffic. Don't want old gas

Parts are arriving. So far received my pre gapped plugs, airaid intake tube, aem filter and tune+ wastegate. Cobb will be here today and catch can next week. I'm very excited. Prob won't tune until after autocross next week. Don't want to run on a partial tune

Run the stage 1 cobb tune while you're waiting for your pro tune to be finished, it's a significant bump and a pretty solid OTS tune, the stage 2 and 3 make the car seem very on edge and unhappy IMO.

Honestly I was planning on waiting for the tune to be ready. Didn't want to run the Cobb tune. Not a fan of a 1 size fits all approach. Also didn't want to have to go through multiple rounds of tunes, so I'm hoping I can have him tune for the wastegate and install it at the same time. Or would it be recommended to do the tune, drive like that for a couple of weeks then do the wastegate and revisions? I can be patient so that isn't a problem

You can install the wastegate once he sends you the base tune file, he will account for the aftermarket wastegate in the base file so the car will be safe to drive you just won't be getting the most out of it until youve done some revisions. About the 3rd or 4th revision you'll really start to notice a difference.

Awesome man. I'm looking forward to it. Ya my buddy told me to install the wastegate without the tune. i told him he was crazy lol

Technically yes you can install the wastegate and drive the car without it being tuned for it, just don't let the car get into boost, but I personally wouldn't either.

UPDATE:

So got the Cobb stage 1 tune installed temporarily, along with the intake, filter and plugs. Holy crap this thing moves now. at first I was a bit discouraged because it didn't really seem any different but I guess it took the computer sometime to learn. After about 50 miles this was a whole new car. Top end is greatly increased as is the whole power band. Finally the 10 speed can take advantage and work as intended on this motor. Once my buddy has time to help with the wastegate install I'll get the protune from PD uploaded and start data logging that.

Right now I'm a big believer of tuning this car, cause HOLY CRAP!! It woke the Hell up
