I remember reading that, as well. I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak authoritatively on the subject, though. I would love to learn.

Damage what seals?
The oil rings inside the turbo that seal the shaft oil passage from the housing. On the journal bearing type turbos we get from the factory they like having some pressure from the exhaust keeping the ring in place, for whatever reason when the exhaust flows too freely the seals allow oil through to get burned. The typical symptom is smoking at idle. Here is the first picture I came across on google showing what I mean (I didn't write those red notes). The solution from tuners has been to increase the idle by ~200rpm to keep the pressure up some:

I wasn't being sarcastic, thanks for sharing. I really should get a book and learn about turbos. I thought the smoke at idle was an oil separator issue and thought the turbo seal would be more of a smoke issue under boost?

Seals do normally blow oil under boost when shot. I never seen seals damaged by an upset balance of crankcase pressure. Only thing I can see happening is when crankcase pressure is high, it constricts the flow in the oil drain line and that will cause oil to seep past the seals and get burnt or injested. That wasn't what I noticed when I did my DP. My smoke was coming from the PCV box letting oil/vapor get siphoned/blown up to the intake manifold at idle. Turbine wheel was clean and dry, so was the throttle body and compressor inlet.

Well I beat a 2014 5.0 already. Gonna hook up my WMI tomorrow which should further the gap. I'd say for 24k, full bolts and WM that's not too bad. I love the car, wish it sounded more Evo but can't have it all I guess
We both beat that 5.0 and I'm only ford tuned, the ford tune pulls pretty strong. Blyman93 with full bolts ons and tuned was surprised how long it took him to pull on me!! Blyman93 has a nice car!!

Could always get a Vargas upgraded turbo stage 1 after you install a intercooler. Should do 350 whp. Need a bigger turbo to pull passed 4-5k.

What I was talking about was specifically when you change the downpipe and suddenly get smoke at idle. That is the cause. I don't think its nearly as common with these cars as it is with other brands, this turbo seems a little better built than some cars come with stock. On mazda it is extremely common to get this problem and start blowing huge clouds of smoke at idle with a catless downpipe.

We have an off road downpipe on her FRPP tuned ecoboost. No codes, no smoke. Doesn't seem to be down on power either. If anything, it's making more power. In all my years, I have never heard of a car losing power from a free flowing exhaust... that just doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, it should only gain power but I've always read on these DI cars that you have to tune for the downpipe. I wondered what the reason was, but then again I'm not a tune salesman. How much gains do you think you got? There are some super cheap downpipes out there, maybe I'll try one for science.

Honestly I'm not sure about the gains. It's her car so I do not drive it very much, but it did feel rather strong the last time I drove it at the track. No intercooler yet and we ran on a hot day. IIRC it picked up 2 mph in the 1/8th, but lost 1 mph in the 1/4 due to the heat.

If I were to guess, I'd say 10-15 rwhp was gained, but I have no way of knowing.

I must have missed that, I don't recall anyone saying you'd lose power from a free flowing exhaust.

As far as I know, the downpipe is where you lose power in the exhaust. I don't think there are any mods that can add power to the Ford tune. I think all you can do to go faster is add 3.73 gears on the Ford tune.
exactly the very first thing I did, once you have a 3.73 and up you cant really go back

I also came from an 06 GT, and I didn't know what I was getting into. Pretty much sacrificed some raw power to gain a suspension platform that is worlds better, more comfort, better interface, and much much better interior/ exterior styling.

Not gonna lie, every time I see a GT on the road, I feel a small amount of regret. but that goes away once I hit a curvy on-ramp going 110 with no issues, which would've been ill advised in my stock 06

Why can't you run a catless DP on the FP tune? I have one on the stock tune and besides the oil burning that was fixed via UPR DVCC, no issues to speak of.
Nice, Did you notice a nice kick in power?? Would you recommend getting one?? Also did you have to get the O2 Sensor Simulator thing to not throw codes???

I really only noticed the sound, which is all I wanted. I only have an O2 extension fitting. No simulator. You are probably gonna need to get a catch can too. Don't forget that.
