You realize this is a refresh not a new model right? The car is not going to lose weight until the s650, just isn't gonna happen, would it be nice sure but I highly doubt it. I doubt active exhaust will happen more likely a louder exhaust hopefully but not likely active. 6 speed is likely gonna remain the same unless they really revamp the engine again which I doubt.

The 2018 will get better but I have a hard time believing it's gonna be a game changer, that's going to happen in 2021. I hope I'm wrong I really do but don't count on it.
There are ways for it to lose weight (the new aluminum panels are one big part of that). If they can fix the 'suitcase' also that's a big savings. I don't see 100lbs but I could see 50-60 lbs.

Wow, the current Stang is barely into it's 3rd year of production and people are looking towards the 2018's and beyond.

Why not?

The GT350TP is 3770lbs with all the extra equipment. In order for a Mustang to offset the 75lbs in a Performance Package and the 50+lbs a GT350 package brings... the cost comes from the drivetrain and unique equipment.

There has always been a 3600lbs GT, just not for $32,000... I was pretty clear on this very subject long ago... The slight MSRP increase this year will lessen the impact of an MSRP increase. Maybe 3%...

Again I would love to see the Mustang drop weight but I don't have confidence in that happening until the s650. For the stang to be a serious competitor it needs a different lighter platform, an aluminum frame would be nice.

A louder stock exhaust would save most of us $600-$1200 bucks since there isn't much performance gains from a cat back.

I thought the mt-82 is maxed out on its torque capacity?
Roush has cars that put down 600 tq at the wheel on the same mt82 as the GT.

Probably because the GT350s already use the Tremec transmission. Ford could easily just bag the MT-82 and put Tremec in everything. Probably a good move if they did that.

Manual transmissions is one thing GM had I have always been envious of. They didn't seem to make/sell many but T56 to TR6060 spanning decades seems simple. I wish Ford would just pick a manual trans and stick with it. At least then people could figure them out and have plenty of parts and cores. In just the last 20 years the mustang has had 8 different manual transmissions.

I'd like to see the following in a Mustang refresh:

1. PTWA cylinder bores.
2. Dual port injection.
3. Magneride.
4. Glass Roof.
5. Wider wheels and tires.
6. Tremec manual transmission (GT350).
7. Get rid of some of that awful hard plastic in the dash and center stack.

If the info in this thread is true, the chance for plasma coated cylinder bores looks good. I dunno though, Ford has only used this in limited production vehicles in the past, but it would be nice.

DPI is probably the answer for the HP bump to beat the Camaro HP?

I don't think we'll see Magneride or the Tremec transmission unless the GT350 goes away. Magneride either as a stand alone option or as part of an updated Performance Pack would be a really sweet option for the GT. It's pretty much the one thing about the new Camaro that I'm envious of.

A wider wheel and tire option would be really nice, but I'm not betting on it.

I'd love to see a glass roof offered again. My '14 GT500 had a glass roof and I loved it to death. Should have never traded that car.

I bet it will lose some weight. Not much but a weight savings is a weight savings. Want to make a bet? ;)

I don't think a glass roof or the plasma coated cylinder bores will be included for 2018. I tend to agree with the rest. What about a heads up display?

I read somewhere in a post here from a union newsletter that Ford is in the middle of installing a full scale plasma spray bore line, so this is coming to something.

School me please. What advantage does a plasma coated spray bore line have? More resistant to heat or some such?

Durability, heat transfer, larger bore, un-shrouded valves, eventually cheaper production, lighter block, accuracy.

I wouldn't say plasma coating is going to have any impact on the maximum bore, un-shrouding of valves or accuracy of the bore size. Bore size is limited by the center to center bore distance and maintaining adequate cylinder wall thickness. You can have a thinner wall with a steel liner because it's stronger and ultimately have a bigger bore. Machining precision these days is so good doesn't make any difference whether the bore is plasma coated or machined steel.

The big disadvantage to plasma coated cylinders is the inability to rebuild the engine if the coating is damaged without some very expensive machining and pressed in steel liners.

Plasma coated cylinders is not a new technology. Back in the late 70s and early 80s when I was racing dirt a lot of engines had plasma coated cylinders.
