No - unless you replace APIM. I've asked the same question in the other mega-thread. There are several versions of hardware apparently (APIM) and the newer Sync versions only are applicable to some of them.
Yes, if you make the necessary changes the update “can” be done. Basically your jailbreaking your Sync system. It requires some know how to do it properly.
Jailbreaking would imply that third party code could run on the unit which is not the case. The utility is formatting the storage to allow 3.4 to install. The end result is still a locked down system.
You are, of course, correct. I was using the term (incorrectly) generically to impress on the OP that this may not be as easy as it sounds.
You are also correct! If someone isn't comfortable with formatting a flash/USB drive, etc. I would agree they may want to have a technically inclined friend look at the instructions before trying it.

It really isn't rocket science... but I will do some more reading and familiarize myself with this new infotainment system since I'm new to SYNC coming from using iDrive (BMW) for the last 5 years. No disrespect meant, if you think you can do it by all means give it a go. I’ve seen way too many people who have no business using even a landline telephone try to attempt this stuff and then ask for help/claim nobody told them so, hence the warning.
