LOL hypermiling reports vs “conservative road trips”...

I will do a hand calculation when this tank runs down for comparison. The first 8 miles are not on the clock because I had to reset trip 1 after driving to the starting point since the fill up.So far for my first two tanks on my 316 mile old 2018 GTPP2 I got 14.8 MPG hand calculated when the computer said 16.3 MPG and 15.4 MPG when the computer said 16.8 MPG.
My commute is all streets and only was on the highway when I drove it home from the dealer and when coming home from 2 softball games. So probably 75% city 25% highway.
Almost as much fun as, "What's the best oil?"...MPG threadsopcorn:
So, what are your thoughts now that the video shows no drafting, no down hill and the wind was a slight N head wind?I’m sorry, these cars aren’t capable of 34.7mpg on flat and level ground at 60 MPH or you bet your ass Ford would be advertising as such.
I can get 40mpg at times with cruise control on. Hell, the fuel shuts off completely down some of the hills in the mountains. Your mustang was only capable of going 34.7 mpg due to the elevation and conditions. At stead state on a level surface it’s just not happening.
I'd say your calibration is likely a good 3MPG off for whatever conditions you've been running in.So, what are your thoughts now that the video shows no drafting, no down hill and the wind was a slight N head wind?
Adjust for a +1.5 mpg error (which at this point is unknown but for arguments sake) we are at 32 mpg for a 22 mile trip. That fit into your knowledge base of these engines and transmission? Exact same speed as before, 60 mph. No touching of the brakes or gas.
I am guessing the higher temp, humidity, and head wind knocked the avg down from 34.7 to 33.5.
The video shows 33.5 but by the time I stopped the video and took the pic the trip reached 22 miles and the mpg went up to 33.6 but let's go with 33.5 since that is all the video shows.
Why no out and back? Poor mpg on the way back is my guess. 20 miles is not enough to get a true reading - that's why the mpg is off. Drive at least 100 miles each way to get a better indicator. Here it is. 33.5 mpg for a over 20 mile trip. No out and back due to a route change so here is a screen shot of the wind at the time. 4 mph north wind. I was driving north so a slight head wind. Elevation went from 50’ to 160’. No drafting as video shows.
Enjoy.
Had to take my mom to the doctor who you can hear talking in the video. Then I had to go to her house and the return trip took us another route which had heavier traffic so yes, it would have caused a difference outside the parameters of the test. You know, real life driving conditions not cruise set at 60 for 22 miles. Why no out and back? Poor mpg on the way back is my guess. 20 miles is not enough to get a true reading - that's why the mpg is off. Drive at least 100 miles each way to get a better indicator.
Anyone who believes the mpg readings on the dash need to get a reality check. I check my average every time I fill up and most of the time the car is telling me I'm getting 2+ mpg higher than calculated. I'm sure some gauges are even more "optimistic". I have 2900 miles on my car now.
