My dad got news today that he secured a build slot for the 2017 build year for a GT350R. He is obviously excited, but he is looking to find out more about the "ideal spec" for a GT350R in terms of the car maintaining/increasing in value over the next decades. I don't think he ever plans on selling it, but life has a way of taking unexpected turns.. Also, if the car ever gets passed down, who knows, maybe my brother and I would look to sell it at the 2050 Barrett Jackson Scottsdale (kidding)..

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Screw what other people may want. Tell him to get what makes him happy now. Also make sure his dealer verifies that it is actually a GT350R allocation. Dealers think the registered trademark logo means it a GT350®(its not). Also if the dealer has paid for an allocation have the sales manager email the regional rep to confirm if it's a R model. They can order it, but Ford will not build it w/o a specific R allocation. Many people here have gone through this at the dealers

If all pans out then Congrats to your pop!

Assume it's going to be a garage queen if there's such an interest in value retention as anything driven will certainly drive down the resale, why not do what Canepa did, all white, I think it really suits the R, that and order it with the radio delete. DONE.

It's total speculation, of course, by I think that future buyers/collectors will look for a few things:

1) Chassis numbers. HR350 will carry a premium. Probably not a significant one, but some. You can't do anything about securing a "good" chassis number.

2) Colors. Oxford White with Blue stripes is a classic Shelby combo. On the 2016 Rs it's also not the most common color. I'd argue that Avalanche Gray will be desirable in the future as it's a Shelby-only color.

3) Rarity. The only way to make the Shelby rare is to delete the Electronics Package and give it an uncommon color. The least common 2016 was a 1 of 1 Triple Yellow R sans Electronics Package. But don't confuse rarity with also being desirable; they were rare at time of manufacture for a reason.

Thanks for the info, another question... How many gt350r's are they planning on producing every year? Is the number known?

~500. 475 were produced as 2016 models. There were only 37 2015s.

For the best resale value I would load it up with every option and buy a color that is new for 2017. The new red is my favorite. I personally would buy it with a black roof and no stripes, but I can't tell you whether that will help resale or not.

Plain white likely will have the best resale. No stripes will be rare, easy for a buyer to add stripes if they want it.

Shame Competion orange isn't around anymore, I think I'd pick that for an R I was going to drive vs collect. That or Triple Yellow.

I'd just build it to his taste. In reality the R is rare regardless of what color you choose. White is most common but even then with anything added at all your looking at less than 100 made/MY. Thats still a low number.
Id just buy a car with the thought of it losing money as it most likely will. Drive it and enjoy it for what it is.

Are you buying it to put it in a garage and never drive it? I plan to take my '17 R and keep the miles off, but still enjoy it. I will use my '16 track pack to track and enjoy.

Bottom line, get what you want. To hell with speculation and future worth because it will probably be a long while before you realize it (if you ever do).

Been there done that ('17R avalanche grey black stripes and black roof on order). That's what I want and I don't care about speculation.

For Rs, I believe the chart shows that black was the most common color for 2016. White is second.
