Hes cross shopping the two because he likes them. Subies have plenty of "rumble". You can get 1000whp out of an sti for about the same cost as a coyote reliably. You cant speak for what everyone choses to look twice at. Plenty of people like awd cars. I have about 20g wrapped up in my dd sti that has mid 700whp cranked up on e85. All the supporting mods for a gt to do that might run about 15-17g. Subies have plenty of "presence ". Maybe not to you but to other people they matter.

As for subie reliability it depend if you buy quality stuff and dont listen to the majority of the idiots on nasioc and iwsti on how to mod your car. Ive never had a single one blow up. All of mine have been modded to the same level roughly. Between the 4 ive had, ive put over half a million miles on them cumulatively. I was also a subaru master tech at one point before i went to ford, and now at bmw. The majority of subarus dont shit the bed. Not all tuners are created equal, there is only a handful of worth while tuners in the subaru community. Odds are , you're using a shit tuner too with following the typical subie mod list.
I like to see a photo or two of the subie sometime. Maybe a photo of the giant snail.:D

Well looks are subjective I'm just saying the 5.0 turns more heads in my experience. Not dissing the subies since they're probably fantastic cars especially with the AWD and make good DD's.

To me they are in a different class.. 4 banger turbos, rally cars with Evo's, Golf's, Focus RS/ST, etc. While the 5.0 is with the Camaro, Scatpacks.. muscle class.

Anyone can cross shop them but it'll be a different car with a different purpose.

I like cars fast from factory.. I just hate how some Evo/Sti owners dog the muscle cars. You'll hear it all the time.. "With a stage XXX tune, we'll shit and walk all over the V8's."

That is what I don't like about those cocky 4 bangers and the few I know think they ARE THE FASTEST in the world.. but some are really cool and I respect those. Just my opinion.

I owned two STi's before I bought my 2016 GT. I actually almost bought another one when I was looking at the mustang. What it came down to for me, personally, was that Subaru is using the same tired ass tech and motor that they used over 10 years ago.
If you want out of the box performance, 10+ year old technology just won't get it done, especially for $40kish
i wanted to get out of my wrx and into an sti cause i was at the limit of the 5spd. i was going to wait and see if the 17 was going to come with a FA motor, since no one knew and my car still had value i traded in it for the 5.0. i still talk to my tuner, they had a 100 mile brand new 17 in and they were doing a swap, the owner wanted big power and didnt want the aggravation of popping the oem motor..sti is a terrible buy, id take a golf r over it for that kinda $$

From my personal experience, I raced a 2016 STI that was stock with my GT PP. All I have for mods is a 3 inch cat back. I put more then a few lengths on him when we ran from 30mph. It wasnt even a race

The EJ motor in the subi is a turd. Ring lands suck... The fa20 in wrx will make more reliable power. Lol.

i was just keeping things factual. I didnt think you were dissing anything. The same shit talking 4 cylinders do, other v6, inline6 and other v8 owners talk the same trash.

I agree they are definitely two drastically different platforms. For some people a 2dr rwd just cant cut it as a daily.

I like to see a photo or two of the subie sometime. Maybe a photo of the giant snail.:D
its just an 07 sti equipped with just a gently used ets 6466 kit and an iag closed deck motor i picked up for a steal with fully built heads, with some other parts to the drivetrain for reliability. Its nothing impressive man. I generally just leave it on low boost 24-26psi vs 36 on kill. Its definitely a fun a daily.

Stop spreading misinformation. The fa20 is definitely not more relaible.

Ive always been a v8 guy but i like the sti well. Like the boxer sound too. I just wish they would up the power to the 350+ range.

I was cross shopping a '16 WRX and GT. Yes, I was an unusual shopper as most people compare the ecoboost. However, I was coming out of a '14 GT and was getting tired of the clunky MT, several fit and finish issues, lousy fuel economy, etc. (i did love the car, just explaining what was appealing to the subaru) after driving the subbie several times, I felt the car was a lot more fun to drive. The AWD and low end torque made it feel quicker than my Mustang, even though it wasn't. But with dealers demanding MSRP for them, the gap between a slightly optioned WRX and fully loaded GT was only a few grand...the difference is in the GTs favor when you jump to the STI. I test drove my 16 GT premium just to make sure I really wanted the subbie. Ended up taking it home after a great deal was worked out and haven't looked back yet. Seems much more solid than my 14 and has drop dead gorgeous looks.

Here's the matchup as I see it, but please correct me where I'm wrong...

Mustang-

Much more comfortable ride
Slightly cheaper
Easier and cheaper to maintain
Significantly better looking (in my opinion)

STI-

AWD which means year round driver even in snow
Slightly faster
Better handling (due to AWD)
Functional back seat
Seems like it'd last for more miles (so long as the turbo is cared for/replaced)

Where am I wrong or missing info?

Thanks

I didn't read the other post. I have owned multiple STIs and was a vendor on Nasioc several years ago. STIs are great cars except for their horrible stock tune and weak pistons. If you do get one, I would immediately do a stage 1 flash. Also, Subaru's warranty is a joke. Honestly though, this is my first mustang and I will never go back to a Subaru.

Seems to me that the real car to compete with the Subaru would be the Focus RS.

Like boxstang40 said though, the boxer sound is sweet with a downpipe and exhaust ... closest to a V8 burble from any other engine layout I've heard.

The ej motor is complete garbage. Every single person I have met with one has blown it at least one. My good friend had and 08 sti and a 15 sti blow ringlands with under 40k miles completely stock. Seriously I could go on all day long with horror stories because I'm friends with a bunch of Subaru fan boys and all of them have plenty of stories... The new wrx motor seems much more promising though. Also Mustang beats it in every single category minus rear passenger comfort and grip in crap weather.

So I went against an STI for Touge Battle style 1 mile long course similar to an autocross. Here are the facts:

2013 Subaru WRX STI
Manual tranny
Tuned to 300whp
Sedan
KW Coilovers with Achilles 123s Tires with 200TW
Lap time: 1 minute 8 seconds

2015 Mustang GT Premium
Auto tranny in Track Mode
Stock tune. Roughly 370whp
BMR Performance springs with Bridgestone RE71R tires with 200TW
Lap time: 1 minute 9 seconds

Another past STi owner here with a blown EJ25 (2005). I am not a fan of them at all. The paint and metal is even worse than the mustangs. I don't know if that got better in the later years or not. If you plan on leaving everything stock, it may be reliable or you may blow an engine. Who knows with these cars. Keep in mind it isn't as fast as the GT and is much harder to work on in my opinion. There is absolutely no space in the engine bay making it a pain to work on. STi's are expensive for what you get and the 10 year old engine tech they use needs to be updated badly.
