So last week i blew my motor at just over 20k miles NA only the whole time. I was tuned by a less reputable company on e85 for over a year then switched to a much better company less than a month ago.

I had just put on a 2018 manifold took it out for a test drive and after 5 or 6 3rd gear pulls up to 7700 rpm the motor blew at 7200 rpm or so in 3rd. Sounded like a pinball in the motor for a second or 2 and it punched a hole in the bottom of the pan

Of course I towed it to the dealership and the preliminary observation is believed to have been a thrown rod. Seeing as my warranty is voided from the tune i didnt bother to have them tear the motor apart to avoid paying insane labor rates to find out the motor is blown anyway.

Has anyone heard of an NA gen 2 throwing a rod at 20k miles? Tuner also did base data logs and said the car seemed happy before i got the e85 tuned. So i finds it hard to believe it was running hot from leaning, i always watched my temps.

Im honestly going a little crazy trying to figure out how plenty of people are running around with 700hp+ and not blowing anything up for a long time. I didnt baby the car but i wasnt at the drag stip every weekend either.

Bummer man sorry to hear. Usually a hot tune kills rings/piston crowns first. Heavy detonation can hammer the top of the rod bearing and the process to knock and rod besring failure usually follow but usually takes time unless its severe. Would check the pistons closely to rule that out. If there is anything left of the rod cap/bearing check for heat damage. Crank journal will turn blue if it gets hot enough.

Any bbq tick/ rattles at low rpm once oil was hot?
What oil weight?

Running a catch can?

Is the rod still on the crank? What part let go?

You'll have to get it apart to start sorting out what happened.

Had a passenger side catch can since new. I did not hear a pronounced tick or rattle ever on the car. Also like i said the tech did not get to the point of failure. I just told them to order a new long block. Ford will be receiving the old block and will investigate i am sure, i will ask the dealer to see if they can keep up to date on it and let me know what they fins

Yes I uploaded the correct tune revision before installing the manifold. The reason I switched tuners was because with the first tuner the car was throwing misfire codes in cylinder 8 or multiple cylinders on cold start, even though I physically never actually heard misfires. With the second company the cold starts on e85 were much tamer and I never once threw a code for misfires on cold start or anything for that matter. TBH I have a feeling something was wrong with the first tuner that wore down on the internals for a long time and it finally just let go. But obviously until ford analyzes the motor I can't know for sure.

Sorry to hear hope everything works out for you.
Did you ever get to log your car with the first tuner?

No, I guess I will just come out and say the first tuner was Bama, and if you know anything about them they don't care to look at data logs and I never logged them cause the sct was annoying to use to say the least.

The sad thing is that you buy a car and pay for it with your hard earned money just for this to happen after a tune which is supposed to increase your enjoyment of the car. I feel bad that this happened to you.

put back stock manifold and take it for warranty replacement? :D

Anyway, it sucks that it happened. Hopefully you can find a good deal on a used 5.0 if you end up replacing it on your own dime.

Dont they offer an 8th cylinder warranty or guarantee on their tunes?

Kept seeing that pop up with their tunes on other forums.

Tbh the techs probably wouldnt even know the difference of manifolds. Once they check the ec and see it was revved to 7.7k rpms would be the tell, that and the 50 times its been flashed.

How pure was the e85 you put in? Was the tank nearly completely empty when switching to e85?
