How do you figure the mustang IRS came from the fusion? The fusion is front wheel drive.
We're not going to see an all aluminum mustang. No way no how. Aluminum is not strong enough for a all unibody car. The F150 is a framed vehicle. The next mustang will more than likely have aluminum hood, fenders, doors, deck lid, suspension components, and of course engine and drivetrain. No way will their be an aluminum unibody!

I wish that when ford made the GT350 they would of made the front suspension (control arms) from aluminum. The made the wheel bearing knuckles from aluminum compared to iron on the lesser mustangs. Also wish they made the doors and deck lid from aluminum. Removing weight from the center of the car is second best from unsprung weight.

It's not going to happen for a mustang. Mind telling me which cars these are? Because just until recently ford and others started making strong sturdy steel unibody cars.
The original NSX was all aluminum unibody and it was designed in '89.

Audi was the one that immediately came to my mind. The A8 was all aluminum starting in 1994 according to this:

The main barrier to aluminum is cost, not any problem associated with material. Similar to carbon fiber and other alternatives to steel. It can be done, just costs more.

C7 corvette utilizes an aluminum frame. Definitely can be done but can it be done at the price point the Mustang starts at (~$23k)?

With Ford offering more vehicles with more aluminum, it's costing way less than what Audi is paying. Economy of scale and amortization over time when your selling mass market really does wonders for pricing.

It will be a bit more expensive but nothing crazy.

That's a mid engine 2 seat car with a subframe. The mustang isnt even in the same class. We're talking 4 passenger front engine car here.

I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying ford won't do it. Not for a very long time. They would likely do a sedan before a coupe.

Ford may not do it. But it would be very. Easy for them to.

It's the top model. It's going to be expensive and this is one area that aluminum will look like a drop in the proverbial bucket, yet have tremendous value to the buyer.

They're doing it on F series.

Zero barrier to Mustang.

I wouldn't be so sure. It all depends on cost/benefit for them. If government regulations force them down a path, etc. If the F-150 goes really well for them they may end up with more and more aluminum in cars.
edit: I do agree with you the higher volume cars may be done first and a sedan is likely to be done first.

A new standard has been set with the GT350...not just a Mustang with a few performance parts and stripes added, but a world class sports coupe that takes on the best the industry has to offer! And the standard will not be lowered with a GT500 whenever it comes along. Be it a SC or TT V-8, or something alltogether different, Ford knows that it must compete with, or surpass anything domestic or import and that's a tall order.

That will certainly involve weight reduction, possibly AWD, a big HP number, etc. Agreed that they will not rush the development of such an important car that will set atop of their FP lineup. This period reminds me of the 60's when I salivated at the thought that something faster and better was coming everytime new models were introduced. Just my speculation, but I sense something very big is coming soon from FP that will leave us all completely blown away and will rock the automotive world!

Interesting!

SVR though? That's Jaguar/Range Rover related, anyway, isn't it? (ie F-Type SVR just launched)......so why would Ford be involved in that?

I await spyshots of the GT500 at the 'Ring in the next few weeks then :D
