Thinking of buying a 2016 GT with manual and have a question. I heard a high pitched gear whine in 4th gear cruising along around 45mph when I gave the car a little gas. While not very loud it was there. There wasn't any associated whine in 3rd or 5th. I noted a number of forum concerns with the manual. Is this normal or should I move onto another car. I didn't have the time to take another GT manual out for the test ride. My current car is a 1996 Corvette and I'm thinking of getting back into a Mustang. I also noted quite a few reliability issues over on the repair side of the forum. What should I look for in a new 2016 that could be problematic? Thanks for the assistance.

There shouldn't be any quality or reliability issues with the GT manual. (my car doesn't have any gear whine in any gear), but like any mass produced car there is always the occasional quality issue, which the normal manufacturer warranty should cover.

If you buy one, just check the usual stuff like panel gaps and take a short test drive to check for anything unusual before you accept delivery. Just the normal new car stuff.

Once you guy it go ahead and makes sure the tire pressures are lowered to the correct 32psi cold and maybe look into a lighter clutch pedal spring to improve feel. The PP package cars can feel a bit bouncy at first, but mine seemed to settle down after a couple thousand miles. That's about it!

The MT-82 transmission is noisy, from clunks to clicks to gear whine. Been that way, apparently, since it was first used and, of course, Ford hasn't ditched it like they should have. But... it works and all that racket is probably normal.

my trans made all kinds of whine and chatter type noises when I got it. It is pretty darn quite now. I have about 9,000 miles on it. It has been quite for a long time now, but I can't say at approximately what mileage it quietened down.

This trans makes noise. Mine personally hasn't had any whine, but my 2011 with the same trans whined more than a 16 year old girl. I wouldn't stress over it.

my car makes some transmission noises, but it's my understanding that it's somewhat normal on the PP equipped cars.

Do many people do a transmission fluid swap or is the stock fluid pretty good to begin with? Same with the differential too.

Most of my clunks and noise come from me still getting used to the clutch. It's super light and has a high engagement point. Taking the clutch spring out helps but it's still there.

Mostly happens for me going from 1-2. Everything else is goof

Despite what a lot of folks say, I wouldn't worry too much about the manual tranny. It can be a little noisy, but this is my 2nd one and I haven't had any real issues.

Do pay attention not only to the panel gaps but also the seat leather. Look for any looseness or wrinkles. Make sure the panels are flush too, my lower quarter panels were pinched in. My rear window also had weird distortion in the glass itself. Never seen anyone else report that one.

Ive never had a manual car that isn't a cold shifting bitch, whiny, clunky or anything else, difference is knowing when it's busted, but 99% of the time its all the experience of a manual trans, nothing wrong with it.

I have a GT PP. I frequently drive with the windows down and at that speed and gear often near my house and haven't noticed any whine. The tranny is clunky, especially when cold.

Reminds of me of my '65 289 that had a four speed, but in a good way! Not a K code, but still wish I had that car...

If it were me, I would test drive another one to see if you hear the same thing. If you don't, I would move to another unit. Heck I would probably move to another unit regardless as I would always be wondering and worrying...

I expect mine to go away when I get my exhaust. Or at least I won't hear it anymore.

Mine whines in 3rd and 4th but is barely noticeable. In had a 2012 and the transmission also whined slightly.

When mine did make noise, it was noticeable from inside the cabin - right at the stick shift. Not sure it would have been noticeable from outside the car. Maybe.
