The coating on one of my black 19" PP wheels is peeling off in multiple areas? Has this happened to anyone else? Warranty issue or am I SOL?? Wasn't planning on going aftermarket wheels but this might push me into it. Weird though that it is only happening to one wheel and none of the others, and they have all seen the same use/weather/washing/etc.

Give your dealership a call and ask. I know the Ford Fusions had issues with their black wheels peeling and they were swapping them out with new ones.

And on the bright side, your wheels are black so it's easy enough to touch up until you are ready to go aftermarket.

warranty claim scares me because I drilled out the rear pockets a tad for spacers. even though the peeling isn't near that area I still think they'll use that as a way to wiggle out of replacing it. like you said not a huge deal with the black color. and now I have another thing to save/plan for over next winter.

I doubt they'd look at the backsides of those wheels. Try the warranty claim. The worst that can happen is they'll say no.

Allergic reaction to when you tried the Ironman dip perhaps? :p

I'd definitely try bringing it to the dealer for replacement before trying anything else, worst they can say is no. And it shouldn't be something that requires you to leave the car with them for any amount of time other than showing up to dismount/mount your tire on the new wheel.

Lots of rock chips on mine (they survived a rather harsh winter, and our highway dept. uses sand/pea gravel for snow treatment). I've ordered a new set from CJ Pony parts (they're Ecoboost PP wheels, but with the wrong finish-silver), and plan to get them powder coated to black before putting them on. P.S. You can't beat their price on these things-$395 w/TPMS sensors (outdoes anything aftermarket). Even with the cost of the powder coating, you still come out way ahead...:headbang:

Worst they can say is no. If the dealership says that drilling out the rear pockets caused the paint to chip, then the only place paint should be chipping/peeling would be in the immediate vicinity of the holes that you drilled.

I'd give it a shot

was told any modification voided any warranty claim. expected. it's now starting to peel on the rear passenger side wheel too. they'll do for this season due to budget but won't last into next year. now to decide if I keep em and powder coat or go aftermarket. new tires are likely even if I keep em.

For the dealership to deny your warranty due to modification of the vehicle, they must prove that the mechanical/other failure is due to the modification of the vehicle.

If you modify the suspension, don't expect them to honor the warranty for suspension components. The same logic can be applied to the rest of the vehicle.

Example:

You install coilovers and 1 month later your #3 cylinder starts misfiring.
In order for the dealership to deny a warranty claim or void your warranty, they'd have to prove that the coilovers installed increased the likelihood that the #3 cylinder would fail.

For the forum member that will inevitably tell me I'm wrong, you should try pushing back on the dealership every once and a while :ninja:

As much as you want to say that you can take advantage of MM, it just isn't that easy or worth it for a lot of things. Sure you can get a lawyer and argue with the dealership/Ford about it...or you can get a new wheel for $200 and be done with it.

It's easy for them to say some BS about how drilling in the back causes unexpected stress on the wheel which could have lead to weakening of the clear coat across the entire surface which is why it is failing now. Now if they said they weren't going to cover something with his engine because of his wheel modification, you have an argument.

Hopefully they just meant warranty on the wheel is gone because he modified it.

The bolded section is more what I was discussing, I should've been more specific. If the dealer tries to void the entire warranty because of a modified wheel, that's BS and would be worth the argument.

For a single wheel, I'd see if they'd warranty it and if they wouldn't, it'd be significantly easier to pick up a used wheel.

If your dealer denies the claim..... id find a new dealer. I at most would take the spacers off and not say a thing about drilling them out any.. Id go in point to the damage, they should be able to take care of ordering one without having to take it off and inspecting it. and then i just dont see the tech checking it out that closely to even care at that point. And again if they do find another dealer. the one i go to wouldnt even care about it

I haven't noticed any issues with peeling, but I've been pretty disappointed with the finish of the gloss black OEM PP wheels myself. They chip very easily even if you don't drive on gravel roads, etc, and the paint coverage is not too great between the spokes and in the barrels. I'm going to have mine powder coated tomorrow and will share pictures when they're done. Luckily they're easy to touch up and don't show too well unless you're shining an led at them up close.

Peeling suggests an issue with the prep work from the factory (just my non-professional opinion). I agree with the other posters who recommended a warranty claim.
