Thanks for everyone for their input, lots of great insight and passionate responses. I am not a regular track rat and have really only gone once a year on average for the last number of years (have an inner ear issue that makes it "not fun" at times), so gaining the last possible second or two is not high on my priority list.
That being said, it seems that the 2017 R (with the backseat already installed) at $10k less than a new 19/20 R is hard to pass up, if I'm willing to accept the higher risk of engine issues that come with the earlier model years - I would definitely extend the warranty!
