Thanks for everyone for their input, lots of great insight and passionate responses. I am not a regular track rat and have really only gone once a year on average for the last number of years (have an inner ear issue that makes it "not fun" at times), so gaining the last possible second or two is not high on my priority list.

That being said, it seems that the 2017 R (with the backseat already installed) at $10k less than a new 19/20 R is hard to pass up, if I'm willing to accept the higher risk of engine issues that come with the earlier model years - I would definitely extend the warranty!

I'll keep you updated...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like the 2019/20 improvements are not significant enough to put the car on part with the R for my purposes. Future re-sale value is of concern to me, so sounds like an older R is worthwhile in that respect alone (noting that a new 20 non-R will have a depreciation hit as soon as its driven off the lot).

I may install a rear seat, but I don't see that as determinative as to whether I get a R or non-R. Installing the rear seats seems relatively straightforward, so not really a factor either way. I guess I will have to budget the cost of that plus new wheels and tires into the price difference between the two though.
Get an R if you want to say you have an R. Personally, i would never get use out of a 15lb lighter wheel that needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap to keep it safe.

Personally, I never considered the R because I knew it would be driven quite a bit and the Recaros just don’t fit me well. The other reason was the CF wheels. Great for the track but not for a daily driver. It wasn’t a money thing, the R just didn’t fit my wants.
Unless you are a track rat, chances are you won’t even notice the differences on the track.
Is it true the carbon fiber wheels are only good for 2 tires changes ?

I never heard that, but again.... there is something weird about it as I have seen so many sets of them for sale over the last few years, I can't believe it

From Spyder Composites” That's a fable. We changed tires on our wheels every track day, we have one set that has at least 20 changes
