Hi guys,
I smoked my clutches and the 3/4 , 3/5 shifts started flaring. Bought a McLeod set of frictions and steels and brought it to a shop. Shop called me yesterday and said 3 pressure plates were toast. Why on to say he could only find 2 and was looking for a third. I don't know much about transmissions, but I thought manuals had pressure plates, and autos has clutch packs? Does the 10r80 have pressure plates? How come I have never heard of them breaking? Thanks for your help

I’m not very familiar with the 10r80 but yes automatic transmissions have pressure plates

he's talking about the clutch plates. watch this video and learn about transmissions. This is a 6r80 trans but is the same for the 10r80s under a different brand name clutches than you would use for the 10r80..

Yes there is a steel pressure plate in autos clutch pack and it can fry, just like the intermediate steels.

Good for your builder that he is not trying to resurface a toasted pressure plate. Right call on his part and it's best to replace it if at all in doubt.

10R80 needs more hydraulic line pressure on a high HP build. Seems like PBD, Lund, etc., should be able to program this into the ECM.

Better clutches alone are not the answer.

Right we talked about that, and he said no way too over come the adaptive learning programming right now.

I. Have watched a couple of these on the 10r80 and they all skip the pressure plates. Makes sense that you need one In every couple clutch pack to "close" the frictions.

Midnight Performance is now the go to source for built 10r80’s. They just hit the 7’s with a stock gen 3 sealed motor and their stage 3 built 10r80.. the current clutch kits that are out now don't last very long under 900 + whp runs. Call them 832-512-7129.

10R80 hard parts are good for 800 lb. pds. of torque. Mainly need some more line pressure to exponentially increase clamping/holding capability.

Ideally, the increased line pressure would be variable based on estimated max HP output at the crank.
