10R80 With McLeod Clutches

Mods: RPG Sleeved Motor, Gen 5 Whipple, 10R80 with McLeod Clutches/Stock Converter, BMR suspension, ET Street SS 305/45/17

Will 900whp be too much power for the 10R80? I know that past that mark they don’t last with just clutches but I was hoping I can pulley down from the stock 3.875 pulley. Car will be on E85.

Going to DD this thing? Drag race, roll race, road race? I think 900whp is in the realm of capable, but could refreshing every couple years.
It’s a weekend car that’ll occasionally see some roll racing and drag racing (once I get a driveshaft and axles) . I guess I’ll keep my 3.25 pulley and send it. After spending a good amount of money on a built motor I feel like it’ll be silly to leave the car at 750-800whp in fear of breaking the 10R80.

Whatever you're going to "break" stock with that kind power is what you would upgrade to begin with. So either way, you will eventually have to do this type of work anyway.

Whether you do it proactively now and get it over with, or you keep it stock and run it for as long as it can handle it then do the work when you eventually burn up the clutches. So basically it's up to you what's going to be more convenient. Take the time now to have the car down for a while, or later in the fall/winter when racing may be on hold. Not sure if that's the case with you being in Florida, but here up north we tend to keep upgrades scheduled for the winter when there's not much going on.

If you're gonna hit the strip with the car and use sticky tires you're gonna want to upgrade to the Mcleod plates. On our car at 900rwhp on ET drags we saw slippage in the datalogs. Installed the Mcleod parts and smooth sailing into the 8's without a worry.

That’s exactly what I’ve done. Installed clutches while waiting for my RPG long block to arrive. Hopefully they can last a while. I wouldn’t mind refreshing them say once a year with new clutches.
