Just over 20K absolutely trouble free miles on my 2018 GT, nearly 6K with boost. Recently my 10R80 started exhibiting a flare when shifting from 5th to 6th under light throttle in normal driving.

I used my Ngauge to delete the KAM (Keep Active Memory) and I re-flashed the tune originally supplied from my tuner (Wengerd Performance).

Problem disappeared. I am posting this in case this happens to someone else.

Where did the term flare come from? Never heard it till I came here.

Are you saying, your transmission slips?

I thought flare was during shifts, and slipping is when in gear.

I honestly don't know. It's a new term for me. And the 10R80 trans is a new experience unto itself.

I could use a definition.

I always described it as a shift that is slipping. Usually gets worse with power.

Flare isn't unique to the 10r80, I've had it in other automatics.

It can happen in any transmission. These transmissions have an electronic valve body so we are taking about a software problem causing it.

When a mechanical valve body transmission flares it’s generally time to rebuild.
Electronic control but still has fluid in it. I had one go out really quickly recently, builder suspected something in the fluid (from my lines, the rebuild, converter, etc) got in the valve body.

What BlackandBlue said is spot on.

A flare is when there is a split second free rev between gears. I built many transmissions back in the early 80's and 90's, from vacuum modulated to electronic controlled.

The clutches/planetaries/sun gears/etc. are the "muscle" of the trans.

The valve body and electronics are the brain.
