Corvette ZR1 vs. Mustang GTD Track Battle

It's a fun video for light entertainment, but not a real track comparison between the two cars.

From everything I've seen, the 'vette is faster. Several reviewers have said the GTD is more fun to drive. I personally wouldn't pick something with an automatic transmission, but these cars are both seriously fast.

I'm glad cars like this are still being built. I would like to see leaner, less expensive vehicles from Ford and Chevy with reasonable HP and smaller tires for regular humans to buy and have fun with. The whole exotic thing is enjoyable to observe, but I'm not going to buy one. Generally they end up as garage queens for someone to brag about. I'd like to see more everyday fun cars built that will be thrashed to within an inch of their lives.

Just like the Mickey Thompson drag radials that cars run 6's and 7's in the 1/4 mile with.

It's not the same Cup 2's the GTD and ZR1 come with...

Can't find a picture of those tires online but I'd bet $100 they look exactly like these Trofeos.

DOT tire, "not intended for highway use" (but street legal), and 40 tread wear rating...

Not even close to the 180 treadwear or whatever cup 2R's that come on the GTD/ZR1 (that also have actual tread)

Yeah there was some discussion around the tire and whether it was DOT approved or if it was a straight up slick.

Street legal is street legal. How many people are driving around doing normal street duty on Cup2 R’s? Probably not many. I’m sure the tire will be released once the Comp model is available. My assumption is it was made specifically for the car and probably only available in sizes to fit the GTD.

We had recently GTD and ZR1 (not ZR1x) at National SCCA autocross event at Grissom AFB. Both were on 200TW index tires (so street tires, nowhere close to Trofeos or Cup2s). GTD wasn't even in the same zip code of the ZR1 (two different drivers, both very good).

So... wait. The "FR" in the tire model number stand for "Ford Racing?" So Ford had a special new tire made just for the GTD Competition? What happens when the ZR1 wears the same tire?

This just never ends. If it really is a very limited "street legal" tire instead of a tire you can just drive on wherever you need to go, it is blurring the lines a little too uncomfortably.

Sheesh. Going to wait for more info. Hopefully the car goes on sale soon.

It's already avaialble and being used the Mustang Challenge race series. Guys online are talking about having picked some up on usedracingtires.com

However, I don't think GM really cares that much about knocking a couple more seconds off their time at Nurburging. Because A) why compete against a car that isn't even released, much less officially announced, and B) the current GTD got already spanked by the ZR1 in every test people have done.

Everyone knew from day 1 it wasn't the tires the original GTD came with and ran the first times on.

How about seat time in each car? Did one have more experience behind the wheel of their respective car? And what tires on each, we know there's a big gulf in 200w tires. Also I'm really curious what tire they fit on the GTD? Because if running Cam, I swore there was a rule you could run the stock tires even if they weren't 200 tw. Been a while since I looked though, and might have been a local event only deal.

I think GTD had either RT660+ or RZs, ZR1 was most definitely on Vitours, what combination they ran that day I have no clue.
I think the OEM tire rule applies to locals only

Like the SS 1LE was faster than the GT350 non R until Ford put comparable tires on the GT350.
