I think a Mustang could be almost anything in a sedan shape if Ford wants it to be and makes it look cool.

I'll take a 5 door hatchback even if it looks sick.

Whatever keeps the sales going and the V8 manuals made.

Oh I gotta hear how it should've been named something that hasn't been made in my 45 year life from the old heads, right. They all got marketing and product design figured out. Yeah the Falcon is a cool name but it's meaningless to anyone not nearing retirement or deaths door.

I also was a huge Lincoln LS fan 25 years ago and owned two of those lousy V8's and saw how an awesome name like Thunderbird could be fumbled so hard. So super not excited for any track record of Ford for bringing back an old nameplate.

Look no further than the Mach E for proof making a new vehicle and calling it a “Mustang” doesn’t work. And a bunch of people with marketing degrees guessed wrong on that one.

so yeah, make a new IP or use a legacy one that has history as a 4 door because both of those options give you just as much chance for success without pissing off a lot of enthusiasts. Seriously, there’s not much advantage in reality to calling it a Mustang. If there was Mach E would be selling like hotcakes.

Sold just fine until the tax rebates got pulled. EV sales have slowed in the US in general, so I think you chalk up the Mach E’s 2026 sales to the broader slow down in the US EV market (down 24% through the first half of 2026 compared to the same time last year).

you can keep repeating the truth, show them actual evidence, and they’ll still push pie in the sky nonsense that somehow this is a great move.

it you build a great vehicle, people will buy it no matter what.

but if you get foolish with identities and calling it something it’s not, it can actually hurt sales.

no one wants the mustang to be anything other than a mustang. We want to see the car itself evolve into something great, not be used as an inglorious prop to sell other vehicles.

A lot of Tesla's momentum is through repeat and add-on sales. People buy or lease a Tesla. Then their spouse buys or leases a Tesla...then their neighbors and kids. Over on the Tesla forum (yes I have a Tesla) there are many users who have multiple Teslas.

Until recently I was an automotive consultant at a company that analyzes sales, registration, production and vehicle brand loyalty. Over 80% of people who buy or lease a Tesla buy or lease another Tesla. Over 90% buy or lease an electric vehicle of any brand. Similarly, over 90% of people who buy or lease any electric vehicle buy or lease another electric vehicle.

Except Ford does not have the overall buyer brand loyalty that Tesla has. Nobody does. Ford does have high brand loyalty for trucks (F150 owners buying another F150 or Maverick or Expedition). Tesla has the highest loyalty for brand products (Model S owner also buying a Cybertruck or a Model X, Y, or 3). GM has the highest loyalty for manufacturer (Chevrolet owner buying a GMC, Buick or Cadillac).
