I wasn’t sure whether to post this in the General forum or under maintenance but I figured it might get more eyes on it here.

Long story short I have a 2021 Mustang with the Roush stage 3 package. I’ve done some minor mods myself, mostly suspension upgrade stuff, and this past winter I had the supercharger ported for a bit more power.

Once I got the supercharger back and installed it I could tell a difference but I knew if I really wanted to notice anything significant I’d at least need to upgrade the exhaust.

This past February I decided to upgrade the exhaust and the fuel system. I installed Kooks 1 7/8 headers with the SS Green connection pipes going to a Roush X pipe mid pipe and Roush active exhaust mufflers. I purchased a Fore Innovations Fuel System Level 2 Triple Pump system and had it installed at a local shop.

After the fuel system was installed the automotive shop informed me that they were taking the car to the tuner to have it tuned and it would be good to go after tuning. This was around the beginning of April of this year.

Ever since the car went to the tuners it has been one humongous headache and just excuse after excuse from the automotive shop. They claim that since Roush locks their tunes that the tuner is having issues tuning the vehicle and flashing the new tune to the vehicle. They’ve been telling me this story for for almost 5 months now and I’m fed up. Surely someone has figured out how to unlock the Roush so that they can be tuned.

I’m just wondering if anyone else that has a Roush has dealt with this issue before and how they were able to get it resolved?

I just want my car back at this point, tuned or not. Between the automotive shop and the tuner I have been without my vehicle for close to half a year. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like that is a ridiculous amount of time for a shop to have a customer’s vehicle. It would be one thing if they were providing me a rental car, or another means of transportation while I feel like the tuner just continues his experiments on my Mustang 😡 but they haven’t and it has been a humongous hassle having to share a vehicle between my wife and I for this long of a time.

PLEASE ANY EXPERIENCED TUNERS or anyone who has experienced this issue with the Roush mustangs reach out to me and let me know how this can be resolved!! I’m definitely willing to pay cash for viable and realistic solutions!!

The 2021 Roush are widely unlocked and easily tunable. Your tuner is either blowing smoke or has no clue what he's doing. There is absolutely no excuse for this and completely insane for them to keep your car that long with such a simple combination.

You didn't mention injector upgrades or E85; did you do either of these?

If not, then I'd flash it back to the stock Roush tune and take it home.

If so, then I'd flash it back to stock, put stock injectors and pump gas in it, and take it home.

If this were my car, I'd put a returnless fuel system back in it. If you're running pump gas then a BAP on a stock pump is fine. On E85 consider a BAP on a DW400 at the least, or a KPM system instead of Fore. Fore is outdated tech with lots of downsides. You'll also need an injector upgrade if you're running E85 on the ported blower. For the Roush setup, I'd contact @DRP Motorsports and get a remote tune. He has lots of experience with the Roush cars and will have that car making tons of power in short order.

What is 'Roush Stage 3 package'? Why are you stuck with the Roush tune? Can't you have a different shop put a different tune on it? When I had a BMW, I had a Cobb tune but there were 3 or 4 (at least) other tuning companies out there. If the tune doesn't work with your mods, put a different tune on it.

Sorry I didn’t mention that I did also have the fuel injectors upgraded to the Injector Dynamics 1050x so I can run it with 93 and E85 fuel.

I don’t know if it was just dumb luck or a very odd coincidence but not 30 minutes after I posted this the auto shop contacted me and said that the tuner was able to flash the tunes to my vehicle. Apparently the first few times the tuner was trying to tune the vehicle it would only give him a few PID’s. Not enough for him to be able to tune the vehicle. But magically after I posted this the tuner was able to get all of the PID’s needed to tune the vehicle. It just all seems a little strange and oddly coincidental to me. 🤷

Definitely recommend Wengerd tuning for Boosted applications. I've had lund before too for the car when it was NA. Only good things to say about either to be honest

I wonder how many miles your car has done since the tuner has had it.
Check your rear tire wear too.

I would not trust their tune worth a shit at this point... limp the car home and order a real tune from elsewhere. Can't believe you waited that long... crazy patience... wonder if they were borrowing parts from your car for other cars... I see no other reason

I agree with others, I would not trust that tune. Call Wengerd and talk to him, he did my MACH 1 and is easy to work with and knows these motors. Get HP Tuners loaded on your laptop, load the TDN app on your phone and buy a MPVI4 and be ready to data log. You'll need to buy 4 credits from HP tuners for the Mustang. If what I just described doesn't make sense to you, either talk to Wengerd about it or send me a PM and a number and I can easily walk you through it and answer your questions. It is not really hard to do.

If you get Wengerd to remote tune you, first thing he's gonna do is ask you to read your current file and he'll take that map and make mods to it. Then he'll send you an updated tune to load via the TDN app (or you can use the laptop). He will then ask you to do some data logging. Usually starts with just starting the car and letting it idle for 2 min then run it up to ~4K rpms for 20 seconds while you data log and then send him the log files. Then eventually after he is happy with the non driving data logging, he'll ask you to go out and do some WOT pulls up to about 6K rpms. He'll look at those logs and make changes and send you an updated map/file and ask you to load it and log again. I ALWAYS have my car on a battery tender when I am flashing tunes. You want to make sure you have stable voltage. I mean you can flash without it being on a tender, but since you are at home, be safe and make sure your battery is topped off.

He will send you a PID listing to use/load in HP Tuners so you are data logging all of the correct PID's he likes to see.

It took me 6 data logs and 3 tune revisions over 2-3 days with Wengerd and now my MACH 1 is perfect and the A10 shifts incredible now. I used 5Star for my Bullitt tune and they too were awesome, but I did take my car to them and had it done on the dyno. Palm Beach Dyno is another good option. But my personal experience is with 5Star and Wengerd and both of them exceeded my expectations and was well worth the money.

It is worth it to get it right. The fact it took them that long and they said it had to do with PID's tells me they ARE FULL OF POOP-

I tuned the trans, active exhaust, idle and fans on mine with both PCMtec and HPtuners. Its was a dealer installed Roush stage 2. I would start by loading the original roush tune and start over with a knowledgeable tuner.
