So I am picking up a spare and will need the jack, lug nut wrench, hold down, etc. Is there a kit that gives you everything you need minus the wheel and tire? What have others done that did not buy the complete kit?

How diy/hands on are you?
A salvage yard that let's you pull your own parts is a fantastic place to get stuff like that. Ebay is another good option.
I like the Ford scissor jack so much I bought a spare for the garage. I just run it up and down with a 3/8 impact gun. It's much easier than digging out my floor jack. Bought it off Ebay for cheap.

I have a battery powered scissor sjack from Duralast. I have three stud extender to make removing the wheel and installing the wheel without hitting the top of the caliper. a 1/2" drive 19mm deep socket and 12" extension( these all fit inside the Duralast scissor jack case) and a low cost harbor freight 250 lb torque wrench. I also have a old tarp and a wheel chock. I should note that I completed this set up with a full size spare tire mounted on a 19x10 rim with a 305/30 tire. I run 305's and 315's on the car so it works on both fronts or rears.

I bought an OEM tire and jack kit on Amazon (it came from a Ford Dealer in Ohio) . Everything was included, including instructions on using the jack and stowing the tire etc. Fit perfectly (as it should, lol). That being said, a wrecking yard or Copart are good sources. My 16 came with a spare and jack and Copart got it after it was totaled.
Nah, couldn't take it, it came with the car. Wish I thought to buy it, but I wasn't even sure I'd get another Mustang at the time.
