Over the last couple months I’ve been watching the market pretty closely… and something kind of wild is happening.

Used GT350s, Mach 1s (especially Handling Pack), and even some Dark Horses are all starting to overlap in that ~$50K–$65K range.

That creates a pretty interesting problem: You’re spending the same money… but getting completely different cars.

So, I met up with Dario Girnus, and we swapped cars back-to-back:

He drove my Dark Horse (Handling Pack)
I jumped back into a GT350 (after owning one previously)
And we broke down where the Mach 1 fits in based on real seat time (street + track)

Big takeaways:

Dark Horse (S650) – By far the most refined. Brakes, MagneRide, and overall confidence at the limit are on another level. Easiest to drive fast.
GT350 – Still the most special experience. Raw, analog, high-revving… but the engine/reliability question is real and should factor into your decision.
Mach 1 – Honestly the sweet spot for a lot of people. Feels closer to Dark Horse than GT350 in capability, but keeps more of the S550 character.

If you’re in that price range right now, this might be one of the hardest Mustang decisions in years.

Let me know your thoughts!

I watched the video, really enjoyed it. I'm still happy with my Mach 1 purchase, just never felt comfortable with buying a used GT350. I'm sure it would have been fine, but I'd always have the paranoia at any odd sound. DH is great, but I'm still warming up to the interior dash. All three are great rides though!

Just checked Autotrader within 100 miles of me and there are multiple new manual Dark Horses advertised for $6000 - $8000 under sticker. And in that same distance range, one Mach 1 and two 350s for sale. People just are not buying the S650s.

For me, Mach 1 = performance, appearance and Coyote engine reliability.

Dark Horse = modern (i.e. updated) tech and mechanical which is good but looks, including dash, not quite so much.

GT350, has that "OMG" factor... Still has it 6 years since production stopped. But landing one now with low(er) mileage, good condition that hasn't been beat, plus engine reliability concerns is a no for me.

If I had to replace my Mach 1 tomorrow due to a catastrophic event... sigh... I'd probably go with a slightly used Dark Horse because it is new, has factory warranty, and does perform. For me, simply looking at it from a cautious perspective, I just can't take a risk of buying an older used high performance car and inheriting a problem. And I just cannot get excited over the C8 Corvette as an option but that's a topic for another thread.

GT350 all day. Most emotional driving experience you’ll find for 50k. Get the extended warranty and send it.
Sadly you can’t get the extended warranty anymore, Ford won’t do it directly, neither will Granger, etc. Tried to see if you could with a 2020.

Me too. That’s a big nope. Oh well if it blows up so be it.

Thanks for the write up and video. Although the DH suspension and brakes are next level compared to the 350 and Mach 1, the weight of the DH is probably the one thing that I am most leery of. Some consider the looks of the DH polarizing but I actually like the car especially lowered with a nice set of wheels. I'm too far down the road on modding my 350 to my liking to turn around and trade for a DH, let alone any other car. Also, not having a car payment is huge plus! All three are great cars and I don't think either is a bad choice depending on your appetite.

M 1 all day every day. S550 good looks (subjective of course), Coyote Reliability, all the coolers and track goodies...

I do love the S650, have MANY friends with them, have driven many of them, including DH, but just not my cup of tea :) My friend's GT/CS is pretty sweet.

Yes unfortunately, I believe that will be when it ends and you will not be able to renew it.

The Mach 1 is the car if you’re worried about voodoo reliability.
I loved how the Dark Horse drove, but I hate the digital dash. It’s de-evolution.
The gt350r is special and I love dancing with the devil each time I drive it. I wouldn’t trade my gt350r base for any Mustang at any price. The analog and purity of purpose will never be seen again. It’s irreplaceable imo.
