Sadly if they wanted to revolve the name around HORSE....it aint bad. Not many other options that sound as good. Wild Horse, Crazy Horse....etc
Yeah, there’s only so much you can do with horse in the name. Could keep the Dark Horse name then add a mythical horse name at the end. Like Dark Horse Daredevil (horse that the headless horseman rides). Just about anything has to be better than SC

I think for the SC version they should have gone back to SVT Cobra and separated it more from the Dark Horse.

Ford has gone all in on their “Ford Racing” mantra. Shelby is not a racing company and hasn’t been for 40+ years. So it makes sense why they didn’t partner with Shelby and have moved on.

Even Dark Horse Boss, to bring the Boss name back would’ve been fine

Using the Dark Horse name is fine, I don’t think you need to totally rely on nostalgic names if the car performs. That said, I do think Dark Horse SC is a dumb name. They could’ve picked something better, whether it’s a new name or a nostalgic name.
The problem is they used a new name on an old product. So the brand recognition is not there

dark horse = S650 Mach 1
Dark horse SC = S650 GT500

if there was something completely bespoke about Dark Horse, the name would have a better legacy IMO

I still say its a missed opportunity to not use SVT Cobra. That era of enthusiast is now entering the sweet spot age wise for disposable income and nostalgia. Just like the Shelby guys when Ford rekindled the Shelby partnership in 2007. They could have waited another decade to try something new. Unfortunately the only "legacy" Dark Horse is forming is a mostly repackaged product for way more money.

S550 Mach 1 = S650 Dark Horse
S550 GT500 = S650 Dark Horse SC

I disagree. I vote for Charlie Horse.

After one of my heroes Charles Sorensen developer of the moving assembly line for Ford and the flathead V8.

Agree 100%. The SVT Cobra has quite a following now. Recently on BAT a low milage in the wrapper 93 Cobra (not an R) went for 204K, and an 03 went for 175K +. In my mind. the 03-04 Terminator is one of the most iconic of all the Mustangs.

It was right there in front of their faces. They were too stubborn to listen to the fan base

Ford was right there when the Barret Jackson stuff took off, why spend 100-200k on a 67 GT500 when we got this 2007 model that will blow it away and have many of the same styling cues in a modern vehicle.

They are there again with Bronco as the prices of the classics, and even OBS are bringing a premium

SVT Cobras are bringing crazy money...WOW those auction results!! Ford is nowhere to be found....unless they count that "FX" package they offered, which looks like it was designed by people that "think" they know what Fox Body people would want...but epic fail.

They could have used some colors and wheels from that 1993-2004 era as inspiration to go along with the GT500 powertrain, and it would have been a home run.

Well as I’ve said before I think they were after new market segment buyers by using the Dark Horse name and variants, thinking that the millennials had little or no knowledge of past names of special mustangs and would not care. In the end this experience failed as this marketing strategy did not attract new buyers into the segment and it alienated older buyers. It was a fail fail decision. Close to what GM did with the “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile” campaign.

Well said sir. I wonder how much of this is Ego? Ford says Shelby doesn't race. We'll thats true (for now) So the excuse for not using Shelby does not work with Cobra or Boss. Anyone who's been around since 2007 knows Shelby, Boss, and Mach 1. Is Farley trying to create his own legacy? Right now, he is but its not what he wants.

The target is probably people like me. Disposable income, mid fifties Gen X. I bounce around between manufacturers without a thought. Aston to Zagonda. All of my close car guy friends are that way too. None of us really pay attention to who makes the car. We focus on whether or not the driving experience is good or bad.

Edit: Thinking about why I'm this way. Probably because I grew up relatively poor. We drove shite, always, so dad wasn't leaving an impression about what manufacturer was good or bad. My group of friends (mostly the same to this day) worked on whatever piece of crap we owned.
