It's a real problem that does exist, even if it only affects <1% of people that own these cars. No harm in learning more about it. ;)
Agreed, but some of the people between this thread and the other are acting like this is the nail in the coffin for their car. It's just not at that level.

Well I have an auto with 3.15's.. and I floor it alot when cruising to pass and just for the hell of it. So far, no issues.. no ping, no knock, no stutter, no black smoke, no explosion.. just the sweet sound of that MMR intake sucking in air like there's no tomorrow, Heh.

While this is an issue, it isn't new. Does anyone remember the Zoom Zoom Boom club from the Mazdaspeed world? I also see a lot of people talking about it only being a DI turbo 4 problem but it also existed for the 03/04 Cobra crowd so this is just a motorsports problem. This is just the flavor of the week when it comes to world ending problems of the EB.

Remember when the world was ending because of a smoking issue with a new downpipe?

Remember when the world was ending because of a random misfire check engine light?

Remember when the world was ending because of a heat shield recall?

I highly recommend people taking a deep breath and drink a beer when browsing this forum because it just seems to stress some people out.

They used a Hypereutectic aluminum alloy piston with a silicon content of 16-19%,there are alot of advantages to this alloy, By adding silicon to the piston's alloy, the piston expansion is dramatically reduced. This allows engineers to specify a much tighter cold-play between the piston and the cylinder liner which reduces wear and emissions. Silicon itself expands less than aluminum, but it also acts as an insulator to prevent the aluminum from absorbing as much of the operational heat as it otherwise would. Another benefit of adding silicon is that the piston becomes harder and is less susceptible to scuffing which can occur when a soft aluminum piston is cold-revved in a relatively dry cylinder on start-up or during abnormally high operating temperatures. An engine with hypereutectic pistons will therefore have a much longer service life than a forged piston engine.

The biggest drawback of adding silicon to pistons is that the piston becomes more brittle as the ratio of silicon to aluminum is increased. This makes the piston more susceptible to cracking if the engine experiences pre-ignition or detonation. Which is why LSPI or "super knock" shatters the piston.

While hypereutectic pistons can be forged, it is very difficult and expensive to do so. Most Forged pistons are 4032 alloy or 11% silicon and expand alot more meaning looser clearances and piston slap when cold but are more resistant to detonation.

Ultra high performance 2618 alloy has 2% silicon and can survive lots of detonation, the expansion ratio is so high however, that you need a large cold tolerance so you will have excessive blow by and piston slap on cold start, an engine made with these will likely need to be rebuilt before 50 to 60 000 miles, probably far less if it sees frequent cold starts and short trips (i.e. a daily driver)

The thing is in past many of engines were running forged and they moved to hypereutectic around mid 80's from my memory .
I have had experience with both cast/forged , while yeh clearance is more on forged I never noticed piston slap, even with hood up and ear to engine .
I can only state what I have seen over the yrs and I have run cast, that cracked the ring lands down, went to forged and never had problem afterwards (note cast were short lived, few months ).
The old Ford 2.3 turbo had forged pistons as reference but still rods were weak .
All I can say, is if I built turbo engine I would not use cast , no matter what .
It seems a shame there pushing so high boost and didn't do anything for durability and were not even yr in so we don't know long term problems.
I could see if they were running lower boost it might pay and be benefit all around but at level now and such fast spoolup I think it will only get worse for them.
Many people don't know and feel they should be able to nail it no the matter rpm or speed .

I don't have real long term numbers for you , My first turbo built was a Opel Manta 1974 (1900cc) . I can't remember what the alloy was (they were slugs from turbo type forges, don't even remember maker (the clearance was around 0065-007).
I used to change parts on that engine so much I can't say, max was probably 50k .
My XR4ti had about 100k before I rebuilt it, compression was good on all 4 but the piston tops were down in cylinder (rods slightly bent) .
Those pistons I think were around 0045 clearance, factory spec .
I think they could pass 100k if they wanted to on forged or just a better alloy then what they got (anyone know what alloy they are using ? ).

I have no problems either but the 1200rpm in 6th gear at 45mph is just plain annoying. If I decide to keep this car, I'll probably get a tune in the spring and have the speed in gears changed by about 10mph. Adam said his tune raises 6th to 55mph. That would be fine.

45 is annoying. Part of it depends on speed limits in your area. I set mine to ~50, so in a 45 mph limit it's solidly in 5th, and in 55+ areas is solidly in 6th. May not be the best way, but that's what I'm trying for now. Some that often drives at 50 would want to shift it to either side for obvious reasons. It's a definite improvement though, once you get the downshift schedule working well with the upshift schedule.

There's always that little S right below the D to take car of that Lol.. I wouldn't do a tune just for that, seems a bit extreme.

I would however like a shorter rear end.. maybe some 3.73's.. but it seems to cost more than it's worth to do the swap, would be better off investing in an IC and E30 tune..
