Drive Smart you'll be fine. Do not be redlining in the cold or when its cold and wet, if its cold out just drive normal simple as that.

Wasn't a relative statement. There's a lot of people I'm terrified of on the road. [emoji14]

I'm terrified by the number of people who run summer tires in freezing/near freezing temps. Heaven forbid you ever have to stop quickly. Driving smart is all well and good, but sometimes, stuff happens and you have to brake/swerve quickly to avoid something that is entirely out of your control (deer, road conditions, other stupid drivers).

Why argue that you need the best tires for traction in the summer, but it's ok to run the wrong tires in winter? I don't even care about cracks in the tires/whatever. I care about wrecking the car and potentially other cars/people/property/etc... I was feeling the loss of traction in the mid 40s, and I don't even have a GT! Winter tires are better feeling, even in the dry, but in the snow, I'd be terrified if I still had my PZeroes or RS3s on (well, I hated the RS3s in the summer, too, but they came with the wheels...). At the very least get A/S for the temp range...
Just curious. Which vehicle concerns you the most...(You may only pick one - A or B)

It's 30 degrees outside and the speed limit is 50mph.

A) Mustang PP (w/summer tires) driving 45mph using Snow/Wet mode and keeping a minimum 2 car distance of others because he/she is very focused on the road and the conditions because he/she knows are equipped w/less traction summer tires

B) SUV (w/All Seasons/Winters) and AWD or 4WD driving 65mph and changing lanes frequently in a rush to get home from work. And in most cases not even sure how old the tires are or when their last checkup was. The driver may even check their cellphone if they receive a tweet/text/or phone call.

personally, I'm scared of B. But but, I had A/S or Winter tires on and have AWD. :tsk:

C) all of the above? When did it become a contest about who is less safe? Why drive comprised? Get the right tire for the conditions and drive appropriately for the conditions. I have snow tires and I do my best to drive respective to the conditions.

I never said I was scared of a and not b.

This thread has me confused....

I'm not going to get into the debate of what temperature is safe to DRIVE on PP tires. But the car in the OP's post is sitting, and then concerned about when someone does buy the car and LATER drive it?

I don't drive my car when it's cold, but are you all telling me that I risk the same (however slight) damage to my tires sitting in my unheated garage and then driving it come warm weather??

I can tell you this - I drove Mustang with summer tires in sub-30 temperatures. Other than tires being rock solid initially, everything was fine. Only problem is obviously snow. Rain/dry is not a concern for a summer tire as they're far superior to any all season. If I lived in a place that doesn't get snow, would never switch back to all seasons.

Here is one from the S550 Facebook page. Stock tires and cold temps, single car accident...
Don't know about that... if you look closely you can see there's a grill delete and what seems to be an intercooler poking at the top. Also, take a trip glance at the guy walking away... would think he would be wearing a jacket or something if it was that cold.

Very helpful. Show me I'm wrong. Who would you rather drive around:

a) Person with a PP Mustang with winter/all seasons driving appropriately for the conditions (below freezing, which always bring a potential for ice, as well)

b) Person with a PP mustang with summer tires driving the same way as person 'a'

I guess I'm the only one who sees the irony in buying sticky track tires because they're better for those conditions, but not buying winter/all season tires even though they are better for those conditions? You can't plan for every eventuality, but if you know it's consistently below freezing? And yeah, of course you don't redline it, but what if you have to brake quickly? Swerve to dodge debris or whatever? Your tires don't matter because you're not accelerating? That's the only time it matters?

Obviously you temper this for where you live - I live where we get snow, and I'm driving in it a LOT, so I have snow tires. If I lived where it was consistently cold, but no snow, I'd probably do performance all seasons for winter. If I lived where it only rarely dipped down cold enough to be of concern, then I'd probably be fine on the summer tires year round with the cautious driving. There is no black and white and to treat the argument as such is worthless.

No one ever answered my initial question though - why wouldn't you get the right tires for the situation? If you buy summer tires for the best traction in summer... why not get the right shoes for winter? Seems like a no brainer to me. And I get that cost is a factor, but as with all things car-wise, you have to pay to play. It's worth it to me to protect my investment, and only the initial cost is more since I'm not wearing out my summer tires during winter...

i agree with you. i'm just saying that the world isnt going to end if you drive summer tires in the winter.

FYI, i was driving on them all winter last year, until the end of january. my barber's parking lot wasnt plowed yet and i couldn't get into a spot because the lot was covered in about an inch of slush. i had to park like this:

up until that moment, i had no issues driving because i only drive on plowed roads. i decided to get yokohama advan sport a/s UHP tires a few days later and have been rocking them since.

unfortunately, i came across a good deal on a set of OEM GTPP wheels/tires so now i have a 2nd set. once my UHP A/S tires wear out, i'll replace them with winter tires, so I'll join the rest of you wussies and run a 2 tire setup.

Yeah, I got a good deal on a set of Roush Quicksilvers, so I use my stock PP wheels for winter.

Probably also makes a difference that I live in a mountainous area, lots of hills, varying snow levels, etc. I like my mustang on snow tires better than any of my Subarus on A/S with the only possible exception being starting uphill after a stop in the snow...
