I'm only getting a slight thud when shifting out of neutral into 1st. No other situations.

Yep, symptom was just the thud. They pulled trans, couldn't find anything wrong. Pulled oil filter, found metal.
And I promise it will THUD when he gets it back. This topic has been beat to death here and other forums with other vehicles. Crank walk WILL NOT cause the thud.
But I'm glad they found a larger problem in the process!!!!!

I don't doubt the thud will be there again.....

Crank walk WILL NOT cause the thud.
My concern is that its the other way around.

Diff car altogether but..... the 6speed gen coupes have a thud issue that makes ours seem mild. There are plenty of them with 100,000 miles with no damaged cranks or driveline damages. My 13 3.8 sounded like the entire Trans would smack the tunnel and shake / jerk the car.

Read half the pages here... wow.

I had to learn how to drive stick before I was really able to tell what was a good sounding shift versus what wasn't. I started really noticing the thud after 3000 miles, and I figured I just didn't have consistent clutch pedal handling. After experimenting, I realized there was some issue with certain shifts but not others, even when doing things exactly the same.

I will demo this to my dealer when I visit next.

I have posted this question to StackExchange. That way, the best answer can be first instead of somewhere in the middle.

I just posted a separate topic about my MT Ecoboost shifting issues. I was directed here.

Here is what I wrote:

Some days, the car shifts beautifully, but more often than not I'm experiencing quite a bit of "clunky" shifting. Especially 1st to second and second to third.

It's not that I have to force the shifter into position, but rather it doesn't go in very smooth. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the gates, but random periods of excellent shifting makes me wonder otherwise...

I'm good at shifting with many, many years experience, but even altering my method of shifting doesn't seem to help when shifting feels bad. The shifting seems very randomly good or bad for a few days on end.

Does this sound like the same issue reported in this thread?
No real solution to this???

I've notices the "thud" and the "notchy feeling while changing gears" but only when it is cold outside.. typically below 60 degrees. I only hear/feel the thud when stopped and going from neutral into first, and it isn't even when the gear is fully engaged, the thud comes right when I enter the beginning of the gate for first gear. I noticed this on a '96 GT as well as an '05 GT. Never thought anything of it as both of those vehicles have been running strong to this day.

I hadn't really really considered the temperature making a difference. That could be it. I'll pay more attention in the coming weeks.

When the car shifts well, it is a real pleasure to drive, but when it's poor, I find it ruins the experience. I'm pretty upset about it.

I see that Ford Service has replied in this thread. I wonder if Ford is investigating this issue? I love my Ecoboost, but I find this this issue really disappointing and hope Ford does something about it.

Does it change when the car warms up?

Without a doubt mine is better when warmed up, especially 1-2. I just let it warm up. I let the engine warm up before hammering it anyway.

Same here, always let the oil and couldn't come to temp before getting on it. By the time those fluid are at temp the trans is warm too. This is what I have always done with my cars.

I have been paying attention and am fairly confident temp. has to do with it. We haven't had many cold days recently in SoCal and the first few months I had the vehicle it was pretty warm out 24/7 (I did not notice any of these issues at all). Not saying you shouldn't check it out -- but you may be a bit on the paranoid side about it which is why it ruins your experience and you should try not thinking about it. Is it typically cold where you are at? See below for my other reply regarding warming up..

Yes. I probably don't let my car warm up in the morning as much as I should. On cold start it idles pretty high and then drops idle in two phases... first phase it is at about 1,000 and that is when I usually leave my house. If I wait longer it'll drop to normal idle ~600. I then have a fairly short distance to freeway onramp and when first getting on (med-heavy traffic) I notice the notchy feeling going through 3/4/5/6 and back down again... my commute is 15 miles, and probably about first few miles in, car is warmed up and feels much better. Oddly, the first time I noticed this, I was in a drivethrough close to my office and heard the thud, but as I mentioned in my previous post, I didn't think much of it as previous manual Mustang's that I have driven also had this on cold mornings.

I am thinking, even at operating temp, if the outside temp is still cold, you will feel the thud and notchy shifting. When it was 90 degrees outside, I never noticed any of these things.

I just took mine out. The clutch feels so much different. I like how you can feel the engagement now. I got to drive it around more and get use to it.
