I drive an AT and was driving at about 10-15 mph the other day when i pushed the start/stop button, just to see what happens. To my surprise, the engine got shut down. I had to stop the car, put in park and start it again.
Is this normal ?? I mean what happens if someone accidently pushes the start/stop button when crusing in a highway!!
P.S : Sorry if there is a post/thread on this already.
Regards
Hemanth

Weird. And not normal.

It should only shut down when you press it and your fully stopped.

I haven't tried this in my car (which is a manual) but I always worried about it. I have an iphone 6 Plus and if I'm using Waze or Google Maps or whatever, I usually have the phone sitting right there in front of the button. There's definitely been a few times where I've been close to pushing it but never have. Was wondering if it would turn off or not. Guess now I know. Not as big of an issue in a manual, I would think. Hell, I still remember the days of "push starting" a car with a dead battery by getting it rolling and popping the clutch. Wonder if the same could be done with this car...

Scientific curiosity required me to test for Design vs Real World functionality. So, today at lunch, on a clear stretch of open highway, I pressed the Start/Stop button several times under both under loaded and coasting conditions (including tranny in neutral) and I'm happy to report that it did NOT shut down the car.

I don't know if there'd be a different outcome with an Automatic tranny, but this was my experience with a manual.

to the OP, did you push and hold the start button, or just tap it?

You have to hold the button for the engine to turn off if you are moving. Once it goes about 8 MPH in Fords you have to do the long press. Under that speed and you hit it and the car will tell you to shift to park. LOL

Appreciate the time taken for the test. Hopefully AT behaves the same as well.

Thanks for the inputs guys. So probably i was driving below 10mph ( i mentioned 10-15 earlier) and i did not push and hold i just pressed it once and i did get the message that "car is not in park" or something and still the engine died.

so conclusion is IT DOES shuts down in low speeds like< 10 mph ?!!

This is not mustang specific and this is not ford specific. Any push button vehicle will do this it's completely normal just as any turn key can be shut off also. Have none of you ever HAD to shut your car off while driving?

umm this is the first car i own with a push button and i assumed it wouldn't shut down while driving (at any speed), and never tried with the rentals that i drove. Moreover my concern is to understand - what if you push the button by mistake "when you don't really want to stop the car" in a busy speedy highway especially when its an automatic!!

I was turning through an intersection the first week I owned the car and went to push the seat cool button and missed and shut my car off on accident in the middle of the intersection driving approx 15-20 mph. Pushed clutch in hit the button again and my passengers never knew anything happened until I told them.

I have tried this in my manual GT while in a parking lot going slow. It DID shut the engine off. I still had power steering since it's electronic and the electrical system seemed to be still on.

you dont need to push in clutch just turn it back on an all is good.
I once pumped the key on a camaro and it shut off. I simply turn it back on.
