I have a JLT and have been monitoring the intake/ambient temp differences and I'm considering a grill delete or modified stock grill.

Before I go through the cost and trouble of doing a grill delete kit I was considering opening up some of the blocked portion in front of the intake on the upper grill.

I know some of you have done this but I'd like some feedback before I decide to do that or bite the bullet for a grill delete kit.

Also, for someone that does a good bit of highway time in the car, any downsides or risk of doing a grill delete kit, basically putting the radiator out there with nothing to protect from larger bugs/debris?

i did my grill delete with my friend blitz. it took about 2 hours (taking bumper off, dremmeling and sanding and reinstalling). its not that hard.
i have inlet air temps of 2-4 degrees over ambient when cruising. it definitely helped. (i have stock air box)

It will make a huge difference for your JLT. When I first installed my JLT and had stock grill I was seeing IAT temps about 15-50 degrees above ambient all the time. Even at highway speeds it wouldnt drop below 12 degrees above ambient. I did the the full DIY grill delete and its a world of a difference. IATs dont get above about 20 degrees over ambient even when im sitting still. And at speed its gotten down to 2 degrees above ambient. In my opinion its definitely worth it, especially since you have an aftermarket intake

I drilled 2 one-half inch holes in the grill next to the open spaces... went fro 15 degrees down to 4-5, at speed. Made a huge difference and is hardly noticeable. The grill delete is cool, but I wanted a more stock appearance.

Modifying the grill won't have much is any effect. Ford balances the grill size with the ability to evacuate air from the engine compartment. To get more air through the grill, radiator and cold air intake track of the air cleaner you need to allow the air to escape the engine compartment easier. This is why Ford put a hood vent and fender vents in the GT350. For every additional cubic foot of air you allow to leave the engine compartment an additional cubic foot of air will take it's place.

Seems pointless to do the grill delete with the MMR intake since it draws air from much lower down. I'm sure the added airflow helps keep the engine compartment cooler but don't think it adds anything to the airflow to the intake.

MMR was after the grill delete. also, grill delete makes sense with the cai because of where the filter is located. i think grill delete would help any intake out. more air is more air. Ill try and get a photo of what im talking about soon...only thing im worried about is getting the filter wet.

Very little extra air will escape from the bottom and it will increase front end lift and drag. Releasing air from a hood vent and/or fender vents decreases both drag and lift while increasing air flow through the radiator.

I am reading a brand new book called "Ford Mustang 2015 The New Generation" by John Clor and available now at Amazon.

In it it says:
The grille provides an inlet for air that cools the engine. However, allowing air to flow through the engine bay instead of directing it around the sides and over the top of the body increases drag.
Each of Mustang's three available engines gets a unique grille that allows in ONLY as much air as the poweplant needs."

So, cutting more holes in the grille where it is blocked will just increase drag. IMHO, I would leave your grille alone as the engineer's designed it.
