I bought a bunch of crush washers and OEM filters only to see that it looks like the OEM drain bolt has a built in rubber seal instead of crush washers. Is this something new or typical for Ford or USDM vehicles?

Ford has been using the rubber seal drain plug on mod motors since the 2V 4.6 came out.

Typically they hold up just fine for many years.

I changed my oil today for the first time on the car. Plug looks just fine with the seal.

Magnetic drain bolt...

I wanted to replace the OEM oil drain bolt with a magnetic one. I picked one up at my local parts store and noticed that it came with a rubber seal rather than a metal crush washer.

Same as for the filter, make sure the rubber seal is 'lubed' with a bit of oil prior to install so it doesn't pinch on tightening.

Any more information on this?
I would like to change mine out for a magnetic plug.
What auto parts store?

QuikChange at Ford dealer said that the OEM drain plug comes with rubber gasket rather than metal crush washer.

I'm also trying to find a magnetic oil drain plug for the 5.0.. I called the local Ford dealer and all he could tell me was the original plug is a 12mm.. No insights as to the pitch.. He didn't inspire a lot of confidence.
Anybody here know for certain the the size of the plug is?

Thanks!

I just changed my oil and am pretty sure I used a 15mm socket. I don't imagine the magnet catching many ferrous particles in the mostly aluminum engine.

This kind of thing drives me nuts.
Today, after some *research* (probably incorrect), I purchased a 12M X 1.75 pitch X 26MM (from the base of the cap-head) magnetic drain plug at Autozone.
I have an oil change due this Friday (6/26) at Ford; if the SOB fits, I'll post the part number here, otherwise, it's all my fault! LOL!!

I know it is not the 12mm man because I had to reach into the larger tool drawer of my craftsman set when the 14mm from the small tray was not enough.

I believe he was referring to the threads, not the bolt head size.
