I first noticed several weeks ago that the gas gauge/low fuel indicator in my car wasn't very reliable and consistent. There were a few occasions where it would suddenly drop from 1/4 tank or less to E, with the "__ miles to empty" dropping super fast. I chalked it up to the computer possibly getting confused by my gas-guzzling city driving around NYC with intermittent highway driving, along with my unpredictable use of the paddle shifters.
However, after what happened to me yesterday I'm convinced that there is a legitimate problem with my car. I was driving back from Northern VA and had filled up in MD. I was cruising along comfortably on the Jersey Turnpike getting about 23-24 mpg. After about 190-ish miles, with the gas gauge just below half a tank and it reading "138 miles to empty", the gauge dropped completely to "E" and the low fuel indicator/warning light suddenly went off informing me that i have "5 miles to empty". After nearly wetting myself, I realized that fortunately I was close to a service station and managed to get my car to a Sunoco. I intentionally put in as much gas as I could to see whether the tank was truly empty. Sure enough I was only able to pump a shade over 9 gallons. Once I restarted the car, all seemed normal.
Has this or anything remotely similar happened to anyone else? Any ideas as to what it might be? Also, assuming it's just a sensor issue and I know there actually is more gas in the tank than what the system is telling me, am I fine to continue driving? Or will the car think the tank is actually empty and cause the engine to shut off?
Apologies if this has already been discussed, I tried searching and didn't come across anything. If there is already a thread on this can someone please direct me to it? Thank you.
