I filled up just after my DTE = 0 miles, and it took about 15 gallons to fill-up, so there was only ~1 gallon left in the tank. I think the owner's manual same something similar. The analog fuel gauge was real near the "E" line also. So in this case, I might only have 15~20 miles to find a gas station.

To check your fuel instrumentation, assume there should be 1 gallon left when DTE = 0. Even if you fill up before DTE = 0, you should be able to back calculate if you DTE is working correctly.

The problem I am having with this is: mechanical needle on 1/4 tank. The Miles To Empty say 39. Now that should mean 4 x 39 for a full tank = 276!!! But I know that is not the case.

In my 2012 Fusion, at 1/4 tank, I still have approx. 125 Miles to Empty displaying. I my previous 2014 Escape, it was about the same. Both of those cars hold a little less fuel than the Mustang. I am averaging 20.9 mpg on the Mustang, 27.4 mpg on the Fusion, and the Escape did 25.2 mpg. So, something is wrong with the either the mechanical gauge or the MTE calculation.

I would think that at 1/4 tank, you should have about 80 miles to empty.

1/4 tank about 4 gallons with 20 MPG = 80 miles.

How many miles to empty does it say when you fill it up?

bunch of threads on this one a while back. This car is the worst i have ever owned. When it says 10 miles to empty, you have 10 miles or less.

My 13 SHO, when it hit 0 miles to empty, I could still go 40 miles.

The DTE calculation is based on you fuel economy for the last 50 miles driven. Not for the tank you are on, or since the last time you reset.

It is always recalculating based on that last 50 miles.

So, lets say you have just come off an epic road trip nothing but highway @ 24 mpg. After 14.5 gallons, you have gone 348 miles. You have .5 gallons in your tank and DTE shows you still can go 12 miles.

But as soon as you get off the highway, you do a couple 0-100 passes. DTE will still show 10 miles or so, but in reality, you just used up that .5 gallons.

Thats why when you fill up, you DTE is different almost every time.

My DTE went to zero exactly when I pulled into a gas station one time. It took ~15 gallons to fill up a 16 gallon tank, so there is only ~1 gallon left when DTE = 0. I think the owner's manual eludes to there only being ~ 1 gallon left when DTE = 0.

Maybe the tank is not the same in all dimensions. I remember my 95 Trans AM.. first half of the tank did great, second have went by quicker because of the shape of the tank. Less fuel in lower half that upper.

When does the actual warning light for low fuel come on? The manual says 1/16 of the tank or 35 milws which ever comes first. I am at 33 miles and there is no warning light on. And I also don't have the Nav automatically telling me the nearest gas station

My "Low Fuel" warning popped up when the DTE = 15 miles. From my calculations, it basically boils down the the "Low Fuel" warning popping up when there is ~2 gallons left in the tank, and then the "DTE = 0 Miles" will show up when there is ~1 gallon left in the tank.

I've had less than a gallon in the tank when it was at 4 miles to empty.

The waring list comes on at different times depending on your driving style. On my GT, it first came on at 10 MTE , the fuel gauge next to E. Next time it came on at 13 MTE and the fuel gauge with a bit more in the tank. In either case, Ford should issue a flash to bump up the first warning to 25 MTE (or make it like the Focus) I understand that the yellow indicator will turn red just before the tank is truly empty. I make it a habit to fill up at 1/4 tank and don't wait for the light. I don't know what Ford was thinking when they set these parameters.
