Do exhausts have a universal break-in effect? Should the noise stay the same or increase/decrease with mileage and use? Just wondering. Mine's sounding a little more raspy and a little less deep but it could just be me.
Yeah, some more than others. I had Borla XR1s on my 5.0 F-150, at first I hated it, too quiet, too tame. Then I had to do a road trip to NY. About half way there, something changed...it got deeper & had much meaner growl to it. Give it time the tone will change!

I dunno. I've heard exhausts have a break in period. I know mine has gotten a little bit quieter since I first installed it. And a bit less trumpety as high RPMs. I've put on about 200-300 miles on the exhaust and it's still evolving a bit.
Mine's also getting less trumpety and the pulses are sounding more raspy, huh.

I don't want it to change! It's perfect to me as is. :(

By no means talking down about the system but I personally felt the rasp was quite apparent in all the videos I've seen.

Was fairly certain I was going to order last night and this got me spooked. LOL

Anyone with more miles have updated videos or input on the sound?

The videos are merely representative. When I think of rasp, I think of buzzy and general noisiness. This system has a distinct bark.

My fear is that in the past two drives that bark has almost completely gone away and now it really is raspy... it's like a completely different system now and I don't know why. Wondering if something changed underneath? Going to look at it this weekend. Don't understand why this would happen so suddenly and so severely.

Mine sounded the same until I did a cross-state road trip. I did plenty of full throttle runs and most of it was highway. Toward the end of the trip and on the way back, the system sounds way more hollow in the midrange and super raspy up top. Also not as loud. Not the same sound anymore.

And I was driving it for a week with no changes at all. This happened over the weekend.

Check your clamps. One of the local forum members helped me adjust my tips this past weekend and in the process we discovered that the axle clamps were a little loose. I also have about 200 miles on it so far and it still sounds the same (the bark/snarl is there).

For me, the interior sound is a little too much (with the windows up). While the cabin has plenty of sound insulation, the trunk does not and it turned into a giant booming resonator after I installed the system (low & mid range). I am going to look into lining it up with some quality carpet pad to block that annoying low frequency boom. With the windows down it's :headbang:, so no issues there.

I definitely will look into this. I didn't have a tool to torque things to any spec, just a ratchet. Wonder if something's loose like you said. That would be an easy fix!

Feel free to PM me once you have had a chance for clamp, clamping surface are inspection. Just so the thread doesn't run too techy. We will have our own section soon as well where I can verbal dump tons of FAQs for you and others :)

In my experience the break in effect happens on exhaust kits where dissipation (long strand fiberglass packing) is used. In the case of the new Mustang kits, we do not use any dissipation, as it uses only RSC gen 3 mufflers, which utilize a targeted acoustic element to focus the sound reduction within a frequency range. (see why I said techy, I can go all day lol, we are sound nerds)

Stainless can expand 1 inch and retract 3/4 of an inch. This is why checking clamps and clamping surface (making sure expanded slot is fully engaged) is paramount. Heat cycling can move things in the beginning :headbang: aka stainless break in with badass driving and long highway runs. After this first re torque and movement you should be set! :amen:

Couple of things to mention I think - my driving is evolving around the new exhaust notes, and as such, the initial phase of my driving had it running a LOT hotter and louder. Now, I know how hard to push it, where to shift for certain sounds, etc., so it overall does sound different.

Not to mention my power curve has shifted up - it's not drastic, but it's noticeable. To get the same torque with the stock system, you do have to push it a little more. There's the slight gain at the higher end of things, but the increased flow sans any tuning/FI/etc., has decreased the low end torque.

I'd bet there is a break in period too. I know mine tames down from a cold start MUCH more quickly now than it did the first few days. It's within the first 10-15 seconds now that it goes from crazy to a low rumble.

However - and this is coming from the guitar player side of me - it's somethign that always happens with new amps/new guitars/new pickups, etc. You first get it, dial it in, and it sounds like magic to your ears because it's something new. Within a few weeks, the honeymoon phase wears off and you start to hear less of the things you loved at first, and more little annoying things. This is the phase where you'll see brand new guitars up for sale within a month of the person ranting and raving about how perfect they were, they'd never need another guitar, blah blah blah.

The human ear has a tendency to get used to bass notes and low end frequencies more readily than hi-pitched ones. As such, I don't think it's surprising at all that now, we're starting to notice more of the rasp/clicks/pops/snaps/bangs it makes as we're driving it.

The fact that it's "changing" after long drives supports this. Concerts sound WAY louder when you first get there as opposed to the end when you're walking out. haha. It's an exposure issue. But the brain is funny - once it gets used to something, it's hard to UN-get used to it.

Combined with the slight break in there is and adaptation of driving habits for daily use, the acceptance our brain applies to certain frequencies is going to give these sort of results.

Since it sounds almost exactly the same now on cold starts as it did prior - if the exhaust had actually changed...that wouldn't be the case. I'd wager it's 98% brain, 1% break in, and 1% changes in engine behavior from climate change.

But that's just my opinion. All I have is the Cat-Back, your mileage may vary.

Myself and our Acoustical Engineer agree... there is always a placebo effect. Reason why we want to go faster and faster and faster too lol.

Is there anyone else who's also heard your system before and after your road-trip? I've heard so many varying opinions on the issue of exhaust break-ins across different brands that I think it's really hard to say whether the tone actually changes.

Also, I could be totally wrong but I wonder if climate conditions play any role in an exhaust tone varying (e.g. temperature, humidity).

What RPM range are you experiencing booming?
